What is wrong with LaTeX? It does all this beautifully. If you want
aribitrary dragging of figures, TeX and friends are not good at that. I
think they were not meant to be. But for a structured document, nothing
beats it. In fact, I really hate it whenever I am forced to do tables
in Word (or Openoffice). In LaTeX, it is easy to create a decent table
without worrying about later additions/reformatting.

Before somebody jumps at me, vim suits me fine. There are some for whom
emacs+auctex work wonders. Some like TeXmacs. KTeXmaker2 is a nice
IDE for LaTeX. I still find it difficult to use LyX.
