Tempting thread.
>From my limited experience, I'd say that a WYSIWYG word
processor is fine for small stuff say a letter, a poster, a
notice or something like that but when you actually have to do
a report or a book, things like LaTeX (haven't used pure TeX
myself yet), <shudder> troff are the right stuff.
TeXmacs is pretty okay when it comes to small stuff - ps, pdf etc. etc.

Openoffice is not bad from what I know and it definitely
deserves more that "it sucks". I have to regularly
deal with documents from people who haven't seen open formats
and Openoffice has managed to open each and every one of them
without any problems. Just a small thing I noticed recently. I
had a ppt file that was 23 MB long. Opened it in Openoffice and
then saved it in it's native format and voila !!! it was just
12 MB in size. Opened faster, same animations etc. etc.

As for antiword... Amazing piece of software, even manages to
render tables using |s and stuff. Really neat. Can convert word
stuff into ps too. wv is pretty nice too from what I hear.
Converts word stuff into HTML (among other formats) pics
included.

If M$ stabilised it's formats, we'd have many better products.
They keep on changing them and the Free software/Open source
community has endless trouble.
