Dead right. An IDE HDD can take a max of 3P+1E.

The MBR must contain the boot code of the booting software. After POST
the BIOS hands over control to the MBR, and it is the code at the MBR
which calls your boot mechanism from elsewhere on the HDD ... The boot
mechanism may be the builtin boot mechanism of one of the OSs, or an
independent software like Partition Magic.

For a NT-Linux dual box, you may use either NT boot mechanism to dual
boot or Linux based boot mechanisms. The one that you use needs to be
on the MBR.

It is not only NT, any M$ OS is extremely posessive about the MBR. Both
LILO and grub can handle this situation, and fire io.sys and other M$
boot files correctly. In a M$-Linux dual box, my personal preference is
to use boot.ini or loadlin and keep the M$ MBR. This is not because it
is in anyway superior to LILO/ grub, but because of gruntings of many
virus scanners working under M$, when the see an "alien" MBR.

Several M$ worms like SirCam, CodeRed use a dummied multi part
OE boundary, starting with an underscore ( _Outlook_ ... ) . A
procmail recipe to segregate mail with such payload:
