IIRC, linux fdisk can create more than one extended partition.. Of course 
that would confuse any M$ OS but who cares..;-)

Tha'ts the reason I have lilo on /dev/hda2 and made it active partition. Hell 
with windows.. Linux always works.. even when backing up NTFS partition while 
upgrade to XP screws it up all..
