folks,

i have been unable to make my tv card work in linux, one of the reasons
i still need to dual-boot windows. it's a bt878 card, so it should be
well supported. yet when i try to tune it with xawtv or kwintv, i only
see very faint ghostly figures shivering and wavering, and on days the
reception is particularly good i can just about make out the HBO logo. i
have tried both with "europe-west" and "scan the whole range", but no
go. the scan fails to register any channel.

here is what lspci shows:

---------------------------------------------------------------------
00:0a.0 Multimedia video controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 (rev
11)

00:0a.1 Multimedia controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 (rev 11)
---------------------------------------------------------------------

and what scanpci shows:

---------------------------------------------------------------------
pci bus 0x0 cardnum 0x0a function 0x0000: vendor 0x109e device 0x036e
 Brooktree Device unknown

pci bus 0x0 cardnum 0x0a function 0x0001: vendor 0x109e device 0x0878
 Brooktree Device unknown
---------------------------------------------------------------------

here's the relevant section from the output of dmesg:

----------------------------------------------------------------------

my XF86Config-4 contains the line

------------
Load "v4l"
------------

lsmod shows "bttv", "i2c-algo-bit", "i2c-core", "tuner" and "videodev".

the kernel is 2.4.18.6mdk. devfs is enabled, so i guess i don't need to
add anything to /etc/modules.conf, which, as it stands, does not contain
any reference to the tv card.

i couldn't find any major exception in the above readings - tell me if
you think otherwise. but the fact remains that the card works great
under windows and isn't working in linux. so help me tv buffs.

- t.
