bt878 alone is not sufficient. What is the brand name of the card.
my modules.conf file is as follows
# I2C module options
alias char-major-89 i2c-dev
options i2c-core        i2c_debug=1
options i2c-algo-bit    bit_test=1

alias char-major-81 bttv
options bttv            card=50 fieldnr=1 gbuffers=2
options tuner           debug=1 type=5 pal=b

against card thenumber should correspond to the number in bttv docs. For my
pixelview play tv pak it is 50.
second my initial lines of .xawtv is as follows.
[global]
ratio = 4:3
freqtab = europe-west
pixsize = 128 x 96
pixcols = 1
jpeg-quality = 75
keypad-ntsc = no
keypad-partial = yes
osd = yes

# [Station name]
# capture = overlay | grabdisplay | on | off
# input = Television | Composite1 | S-Video | ...
# norm = PAL | NTSC | SECAM | ...
# channel = #
# fine = # (-128..+127)
# key = keysym | modifier+keysym
# color = #
# bright = #
# hue = #
# contrast = #

[defaults]
norm = pal
input = television
capture = over
color = 49%
contrast = 42%

I hope with this as guide try for your card.
