Most USB mass storage devices are mounted as virtual scsi devices.

When you insert the drive into the USB port, do a dmesg and look for
messages telling you about the kernel reacting to the USB device.

You will see something like "Attached USB Mass Storage device as /dev/sda1"

Now as root, create a mountpoint (say /mnt/xdrive) and mount the drive as:

# mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/xdrive
# cd /mnt/xdrive
# ls 

You should see the contents of your drive.

This even works with other USB storage devices such as zip drives, 
flash card readers etc.
