AFAIK, the umount process  would do a  sync before  closure so 
that all pending processes for that device are complete ... No 
need to do a "sync" unless  you want  to flush all buffers for
some other purpose."umount" itself is adequate for any mounted
device. There is nothing extra for an USB mount.
