Since I wanted to use smtp auth with sendmail as the client, I need not compile sendmail since sasl is compiled in sendmail binary. Now I can use happily smtp auth with sendmail. Only when I need to use smtp auth on the server I will have to compile sendmail.
As your sendmail is linked with SASL libs you can use it as an auth server too. All you have to do is to stick the appropriate macros in sendmail.mc and rebuild sendmail.cf - no need to recompile sendmail.
