Recompilation of kernel with unwanted modules kicked out, will make a difference, though i cant really say, how much of a difference it will. YOu will need to test it out yourself to feel the difference. I not sure, but i think, the distros released by redhat has a kernel compiled for i386 by default. So compiling and optimising it for i686 should certainly make a difference.
