Is there any reason for OpenOffice to be slow? I ave compared the

The reason OO is so slow is that it opens all the programs. If you just click on a excel file in say konqueror and it loads open office from scratch, the times are going to be horribly slow.

Start open office first. After it is completely loaded, open the file. Also for true comparison, do not open an excel file in OO. Open native calc file. This will keep the filtering time out.

Startup time is a problem for OO. The developers are working on it. But it will take long time before it will be anywhere near satisfactory. There are historical reasons for that.

But once started it's pretty snappy.

Do you have less RAM by any chance? If you have 128MB RAM, chances are that most of the slowdown you are getting is due to swapping. Check swap usage before and after OO is loaded..
