Check if DMA is enabled foryour hard disk. Hard disk spped could be a constraint. I 
was facing the same problem on my laptop, but after I enabled DMA, OO responded pretty 
well.

I don't have an answer to your question specifically, but OO 1.1 is 
significantly faster than the older 1.x version.
