Payal Rathod [10/6/2003 8:05 AM] :

$ ssh -2 -C [EMAIL PROTECTED] -L 2525:localhost:25

I got this working on Linux on one ISP. Another ISP which provides me shell connection (staticky.com) didn't allow this. Can you tell me in *english* what the command did? I mean I understand what is -2, -C and somewhat what is -L but in plain enaglish what does this do? Please don't use the word "tunnel", it is so broad :)

All it does is that it maps the port localhost:2525 (your desktop port 2525) to localhost:25 on the remote server.

So if you telnet to localhost 2525 on your desktop, it is like ssh'ing to the remote server and doing a telnet localhost 25. You will get the smtp banner of the remote server on localhost:2525

But are we doing something legal? If the webmaster has closed down SMTP
for me he must have his/her reasons. Is it legal to use "tunnel" to go
thru'. Can I lose my account due to this.

It is perfectly legal - you have smtp access through staticky.com right? If localhost:25 doesnt work there, use mail.staticky.com:25 instead (most likely that your webserver and mailserver might be on different IPs)

Assume I want to mail you using [EMAIL PROTECTED], what do I do?
VSNL/BSNL guys won't give me shell account, neither does rediff.

So set up mutt on your desktop with from: set to your rediffmail acct. Configure qmail to smarthost through a server that lets you do smtp auth, or configure qmail to smarthost through the tunneled connection as above (in smtproutes, * localhost:2525, or * smtp.some-server.com)

Now, if I want to send a mail from my local machine with an address
[EMAIL PROTECTED], the mail won't go, because control/smtproutes will make
it go via. softhome.net and softhome.net won't accept the mail.
Are you getting me?

I got you perfectly - so send it through a site like myrealbox.com, that lets you use any account in the from, as long as you authenticate yourself with your myrealbox username and password.

dishnets sucks. dishnet sucks. dishnet sucks.
When I try to send a mail to my friend with disnet address, I get an
SMTP deferral that the server is too busy. Are those guys serious?

You have to ask?

give free shells, and free smtp auth capable accounts - or there are lots of webhosts that support smtp auth for roaming clients, and offer unlimited email addresses for a domain, at $9.95 a month and up).

Are you in US?

I'm in Madras. I have a colo server stateside that I run my mail on (and a few other things - such as the ilug-delhi mailing list, ilug-hyderabad website etc).

You hate qmail???????????????????????? It is VERY cute. It is the best
MTA around. And now, I hate your reverse helo practice more.
Wish I become your client so I can complain to your boss about your
practice :)

Go right ahead. I report to my CTO, and he is an even bigger fan of this helo filtering idea than I am. :)

Becoming our user is easy (go to www.linuxmail.org, www.mail.com, www.indiainfo.com etc and sign up). Becoming our client means that you run a webmail or other email domain the size of indiainfo (say) and ask us to host mail for the domain :)
