Subject: [LIH]Optimum config. for Linux
I'm purchasing a new computer in which I would like to dual boot
(RH8.0) alongwith Win98. I'm thinking of going for a P4 1.8 G.hz
pc with chipset motheboard. Will I have any problems in this?
May be someone who recently bought a system can give some tips.
Dual-booting is not a concern for any hardware, as long as all devices
are supported by GNU-Linux, which mostly are. Pentium IV is good, but
what's a 'chipset motherboard' ? There ought to be a chipset, but which
one would your board have ?
HDD will be 40Gb and 128 DDR Ram
Good. Ask yourself which brand, what rpm for HDD. DDR at what Mhz.
Also heard that AMD generates much heat and I hence I would like
to settle with Intel processors.
I wouldn't have brought out the AMD word, but since you did.. Well, it
doesn't make heat as if the whole thing and your house is going to burn
down and the fire-brigade would've some work. With a good fan, AMD
Athlon XP is a fine fine fine choice. I use AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (1667
Mhz) myself, with 256 DDR RAM, MSI KT4V, nVIDIA GeForce4 64 Mb DDR
Graphics card, apart from HDD, CR-R, CD-RW. If you've even a slight
inclination to go for AMD, go with it. You'd save Rs. 4,000 - 5,000/-
and ALSO have a good processor. If you're thermo-phobic, get a high rpm
Thermaltake fan and a good thermal paste (if the ones packed aren't good
enough for your needs).
Or would welcome if someone could suggest a good config.
AMD AthlonXP 2400+ (?), MSI or ASUS motherboard, nVIDIA Graphics card,
128/256 DDR RAM... Check on VIA KT600 chipset based boards, dont know
what's the cost though. All on-board, graphics, sound, network
controller could lower your costs.
Thanks much,
Franklin
Belsare.

Gates: Windows boots up way faster.
Torvalds: True enough. It also shuts down faster, most often without
permission (gotta love that blue screen)
