Probably if the bsd devel team had adopted a more open development model more number of commercial Enterprise applications would have been BSD based then Gnu/Linux. Just an after thought!!!.
Right now the *bsd devel teams are quite flexible / open
The thing is, they are conservative, preferring stability and security to support for the latest and greatest hardware and such.
So, bsds make great servers (and fairly decent desktops too, if you aren't running some bleeding-edge hardware, and if you like bare minimum distros like the slackware 9.1 + 2.6.3-rc1-bk2 kernel that I'm running now)
