quite good. I have written a server which opens a pool of connections to mysql. qmail-smtpd then connects to my server instead through a fifo. This prevents frequent making and tearing down of connections to MySQL and gives very high rate of requests/sec.
Connection pooling in mysql is essential, yes.
Any mods to tcpserver? And any hard numbers on the qmail / postfix comparison you mentioned?
