This is in connection with a multiboot box, having to share
data from respective $HOME. AFAIK, ldap would not help here.

Wondering what all those binaries in /bin, /sbin, /usr/bin and
other binary directories do ? As root create a whatis database
for your system with "makewhatis" command as root. Then  as an
user type in "whatis some_program". "man whatis" for details.
