Dear List,
My aim is to get Debian Unstable (Sarge?) on my computer. I cannot get hold of
the Sarge installation CD's. However, I have high speed access to the APT
archive (~2 MBps) at ftp.iitm.ac.in.

I tried the network install using floppies, but my hard disk was not detected.
So, I stopped trying. I then got hold of Knoppix 3.3, and installed it onto my
hard disk. X was not working, but after running xf86config and putting the
entering settings, I could use X. Networking was also fine. So, what I did to
get to Debian unstable is, to change my /etc/apt/sources.list to point to
ftp.iitm.ac.in, and run apt-get update followed by apt-get -t unstable
dist-upgrade. Some 5 packages (one of which is hdparm), was not found. So, I
tried apt-get -t unstable dist-upgrade --fix-missing. It then went on for some
time, and while installing kdelibs, complained of a conflict with
openoffice-de-en. So, I removed openoffice-de-en and resumed this process.
Finally, once it ended, I restarted my computer, to find that many things
which are not necessary for me, like apache, squid, yp etc. are starting up,
but X is not working. So, I manually removed these packages using dpkr -r. On
the next restart, I ran xf86config again, and this time, X started, but there
was no display manager. I then did apt-get -t unstable kdm followed by
/etc/init.d/kdm start, but KDM crashes whenever I try to log in. So, I have
given up on this attempt.

Is there any other way (besides CDs) to get Debian unstable? I mean, for
example, using Knoppix and buidling upon it? If so, what are the correct APT
commands?

Thanks.

Kumar
