KDE is not such a big problem. I have my home directory carried from
Mandrake8.0. I am on Slackware 10.1 via Mandrake(s) and freeBSD in
between.

There are problems with migration but usually on startup, KDE applications
ask for migration to newer version.

Of course, you can't expect migration from KDE2.0 to 3.4 to work but
incrementally, it does work.
