ACPI works quite well with the standard slackware packages

I would suggest you install the 2.6 kernel in the testing/ directory rather 
than stick with the 2.4

Then install these -

cpufreqd - cpufreqd.sourceforge.net (to slow down / speed up the cpu depending 
on system load / what you are doing like playing a dvd, and whether youre on 
AC power or battery ...)

laptop-mode-tools - http://www.xs4all.nl/~bsamwel/laptop_mode/tools/ (hdparm 
optimizations for your laptop)

ipw2200 centrino wifi drivers (if its a centrino laptop - else scout around 
for other wifi drivers) - http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net  [stick with 2.6.12 
if you do this - the current ipw2200 has some issues with 2.6.13 that need 
patching - but the patches i tried didnt work too well so am at 2.6.12.8 now]

recompile your kernel if necessary to enable software suspend
