The second problem is also solved. I did added the following under the Device section in the Xorg.conf to make it permanent: Section "Device" Identifier "Configured Video Device" Option "monitor-VGA" "DELL LCD" Option "monitor-LVDS" "IBM LCD" EndSection And I now also realize why it was not happening earlier when I did the same changes to xorg.conf file, I mistyped "DELL LCD" as "DELL-LCD" at one place and have also put the Virtual screen as 2048x768 instead of 2048 768 Thanks Ashish for getting this working.
