With scim you have the choice of multiple keyboards for the same language. For instance, I prefer the ITRANS keyboard for Hindi, since that is phonetic (type k-a-a to get Hindi "Ka" with "Aa" ki matra). This works fine if you're just an occasional user like me, though I believe the phonetic keyboard is deprecated if you're going to be doing serious amounts of work in that language.
