No, I want to know if they work fine from Palm to Linux. From
Palm to Linux. Not from Linux to Palm. In the same direction as the
failed PPP connection.

Probably you didn't configure module.conf. Did you check that
the dongle module is actually loaded ?
By the way, which esi dongle driver are you using, esi.o or
litelink.o ?

This is not the option you want. You want "passive".
