  Hello Martin,

First I would like to thank you for your answer. I effectivelly checked
that /dev/modem is properly linked to /dev/ttyS1, and actually tried to use
both /dev/ttyS1 and its soft link with the same result.
As additional information, the configuration I have problem with actually
is a kernel 2.2.14 (that I recompiled) and a pcmcia 3.1.8 that I recompiled
against this kernel. When I run the RedHat 6.1 distribution kernel 2.2.12
then this device works fine without any problem of IRQ or other ...
My suspicion is that I may have forgotten to include some necessary support
when recompiling the kernel 2.2.14.
Does it make sense? What's are the option which are required in the kernel
in order to use pcmcia and a serial modem?

Thanks in advance for any hints.

                Gerald Carrier.
