My problem here is that the IRC guy explained me that posting != feeding
batches with IHAVE, will suck fed batches to INN with IHAVE and said it was
"posting" the batch.

Nomenclature problem. I am running Leafnode now, and it's a fine server.

Two ways to get around this.

% netscape -no-about-splash

or, in .Xdefaults (or .Xresources, depending on your setup):

Netscape*noAboutSplash: true

At the lilo prompt, type "linux single", this will put you into
single user mode, you can then change your inittab.

Yes use these two files for connecting to the isp:-

................./etc/ppp/options.................................
modem
crtscts
defaultroute
asyncmap 0
mtu 1200
mru 1200
..................................................................

......................dial...................................................
pppd /dev/modem 38400 modem connect 'chat -v "" ATDT phone-num "CONNECT" ""
"ogin:" "your-login" "word:" "your-password" "$" "ppp"'
..............................................................................

note: my isp sends me a "$" after Ive logged in, its the shell prompt. At that
point if I want ppp, I need to enter "ppp", thats why the last two parts in
dial are "$" "ppp". This means expect $ send ppp. yours may be different.
"dial" is in my home dir, but needs root privelege to work, you can use sudo for
this, if you wish to dial as a normal user (I do).

IMPORTANT: make sure only root can read the "dial" file as your password is
in it, and of course it must be executable.

The quotes stay, just change your-login to your actual login etc. These is a
copy, verbatim of what I use every day, be careful to use a good editor that
does not add any other characters or spaces etc. Watch your log as you
execute dial, to see whats happening.

The mtu's are optomised for Quake World!, you may need to try different
values for optimum performance (295 -1500, default 500).

Another caveat, you need to have a /dev/modem symlink to your actual modem
serial port, or change it in 'dial".

Don't exhile me for this posting...I'm posting this because ultimately it's
advocating Linux...read on...

One reason I personally stuck with the MS platform AT ALL was because of the
PIM/Project/Contact management software "strength" compared to Linux. I hope
my company can offset that in the near future, I've been an Linux advocate
to our partners/clients since the .98 (pl 13 I think) days but mostly as
regards the "server" functionality (NTP, DNS, NB/NetWare file/print, etc.).
I know we can get the software done, but hopefully it'll be sooner that
later. We need a day soon when my dad can handle adding/removing components
to a Linux system (he knows almost nothing about
computers/(N)OSs/UIs/applications) and we're getting there a lot faster than
Microsoft took to get where they are now...

My company is working on a Project/Contact/Information Management program
which will first be out on MS platforms. It's all ANSI SQL based and has
been tested on access to SQL on Linux: but that's vaporware for now because
we have to release it (in beta now) and recoup some funds first before we
even consider that part (or we need projects to offset the development
cost). The NEXT platform and general release (planned as a port of our 1.x)
should be on Linux, if we can find the right person(s) to help coding that
is. It may be a bit off, but if anyone is interested in any developments on
the Linux port, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Or if anyone is
interested in a job porting/consulting to Linux, send a resume to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Most of our consulting is done in the
Chicago-land/Indiana/Wisconsin area (primarily Chicago and its suburbs).
Good luck in your search or development of the software you need if ours
doesn't make it out quickly enough for you to boast about to your MS peers -
hey, hopefully they'd be using our software there as well!

Best Regards,
Matthew

Redhat 5.2 Server vs Workstation: Anyone using the server out there???
========================================================================================

This is a pretty basic quesiton and a problem I've had with many
installs in the past. (i.e. Redhat 3.0.3 thru 5.1)

Question I'm looking to have answered:
"What server software is installed when you use this option?"

In the past I've had to manually install the:
FTP server
POP3 mail server
(In fact the pop3 server was not even on the CDs and I even got the
        powertools disk set)
and some other programs. (I forget the exact names)

Anyhow, can anyone tell me what installs by default and what else one
can choose from?

Thanks,
Ken

Date: 28 Dec 1998 13:35:03 +0800

We have set up several Linux client machines behind an IP masquerade server.
That is, the server is the GATEWAY to the outside world. We are using the
addresses 192.168.1.x for all the machines within the masquerade. The server
has two NIC cards and it acts as the DNS and DHCP server for the clients as
well. Things work fine if the server is up. But as soon as the server goes
down for any reason, the GATEWAY is no longer available of course, and the
other machines will have problems running like not being able to:

 - open xterm sessions
 - run KDE
 - scan emails in MH
 - and many other things related to X windows

Why do all the above operations need to have the GATEWAY to be up before they
can run properly? Please help. Thanks.

Please show us the scripts and the results.
You could still have errors such as:
No login sequence was actually required.
A chat delay at ISP PPP start up may be necessary.
Your script sent extraneous CRs which can confuse the ISP.

Please turn on debugging so we can see
what's happening with PPP negotiations.
PPP negotiation problems can also cause this type of behavior.

SIGHUP (Signal Hang Up)
When a modem drops the line, the usual indication to pppd is a SIGHUP.
Unfortunately, there are many reasons the ISP
(or you) may cut the line.

Here's a standard set of options I frequently use (with ppp-2.3.5).

debug
/dev/ttyS0
57600
modem
crtscts
connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v -f $HOME/.pppchat"
asyncmap 00000000
noipdefault
defaultroute

But without more specifics,
this is just a shot in the dark.
Also, does your ISP require authentication within PPP?

> No other errors. I'm in despair and about to get on an anti-depressant.

There are likely errors that are not visible yet.
