Hi all,

I am having problems using the above dvd drive in linux (also sold under
the name I/O Magic x6 DVD. I do not seem to be able to access past 2.5GB
or so. If I mount a disc (either as udf or iso9660) and run file on the
contents I get the following output:

/dvd/video_ts/video_ts.bup: data
/dvd/video_ts/video_ts.ifo: data
/dvd/video_ts/video_ts.vob: MPEG system stream data
/dvd/video_ts/vts_01_0.bup: file: read failed (Input/output error).
/dvd/video_ts/vts_01_0.ifo: data

/dvd/video_ts/vts_03_0.vob: file: read failed (Input/output error).
/dvd/video_ts/vts_03_1.vob: file: read failed (Input/output error).

And in /var/log/messages (last few lines):

Mar 17 09:56:12 debian kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device

df reports the capacity of the disc correctly:

/dev/hdd               5954922   5954922         0 100% /dvd

however /proc/ide/hdd/capacity gives it as 2622472.

If I mount the drive via ide-scsi I can read even less of it!

I know of at least one other linux user with the same drive who has the
same problems... please can you mail me if you have the same experience
with this or any other DVD drive.

Andrew

Could I recommend mondo backup... it creates multiple CD backups of your
system from linux (it can even backup windows partitions), the first of
which is bootable.

Find it in freshmeat.net

Subject: Please help (login denied, but strange)
Date: Sat, 17 Mar 2001 10:43:38 GMT

Hi all!

I have a really serious problem with my Linux box which is running RedHat
7.0.
My RH 7 with Lotus Domino 5.0.3 worked perfectly, until Domino began to make
problems (see my post in comp.groupware.lotus-notes);
Now my Linux doesn't let me log in, neither as root nor as any other use
present. It is a bit strange because start up completes normally, even
shutdown is ok (via Ctrl+Alt+Del!) and I have ftp-access (all daemons and
services start up correctly); However, when I log in on the server console I
enter the login (e.g. "root") and... nothing happens. I can then press
Ctrl+C and can try again, no matter whih console/user combination I try, I'm
never asked for user's password.
I tried via telnet then, but it doesn't help... telnet, although running,
doesn't even ask me for my username (but it sends the "RedHat Linux 7
(Guiness)..." message to the client)

Please help, I'm really stuck

kind regards

Messi

It is possible to have installed (for example) both XFree86 3.3.6
(which uses XF86Config) and XFree86 4.0.x (which uses XF86Config-4).

A typical example is the system with which I'm familiar, Red Hat 7.
They supplied both versions in order to support a wider range of
hardware. Which server is actually being run is selected by what
the symbolic link /etc/X11/X points to. For example, if it points
to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86, that'll be XFree86 4.0.x.  If you didn't
happen to know that, you could learn it on a Red Hat or other
RPM-based system by
     rpm -qf /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86

Another common configuration is when /etc/X11/X points to
/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86_SVGA, which belongs to XFree86 3.3.6 on
recent systems.

Hope this helps.

Subject: How can I boot Primary Slave with LILO?
Date: Sat, 17 Mar 2001 19:05:13 +0800

I have a 40GB harddisk installed on my computer.
I put a chinese win2k & a chinese win-me on it.
And I want to boot them with LILO without changing the BIOS settings.
When I try it ( I typed the os name and hit enter ),
it said :
Loading cwin2k [ cwin2k is my chinese win2k label ]
L? [ i don't know what is it ]
And the chinese win-me got the same result without the L? line.

I typed the following things in my /etc/lilo.conf:

boot = /dev/hda
delay = 100
vga = normal
default = linux
compact

.. [ my linux configurations ] ...

... [ my eng win2k configuration on /dev/hda1 ] ...

other = /dev/hdb1 # This is the problem chinese win2k
  table = /dev/hdb
  label = cwin2k

other = /dev/hdb2 # The chinese win-me
  table = /dev/hdb
  label = cwinme

I also tried linuxconf.But it didn't work.
Thanks

boot.img is the standard installation boot diskette image - it does not need
be the same the CD is booting from.

The real boot diskette image is outside of the file system, pointed to by a
pointer in the CD contents catalog. There may actually be several different
boot images on an El Torito CD.

IMHO, the only way to get the real boot image is to follow the links.

Hello,

boot a rescue system from your distro CD, mount your / to /mnt
and check the various logfiles in /mnt/var/log may be this gives
you a clue what went wrong. Post real data from those files if
you can't get it right on yourself.

Good luck

They probably wont work with a MoBo this old.
The new LILO's use the so called extended int13 calls, which are
a way to overcome the problems of the disk access calls, that
could only address up to 1024 cylinders. Old BIOS's have no
support for these calls

You could have a cron job that runs fetchmail, and a mail server on
your home (presumably Linux) computer, and sshd (not telnetd unless
you like having people hack into your system) so you could check from
work, assuming work lets you run ssh.

Why not?
I do the following:
I have the script with place for the dynamic passwd coded like ...PPAASSWWOORRDD.
Then I wrote a shell script with one arg - the dynamic passwd -
and it uses sed to modify the script and start it.
NOTE: this only works on my demand (manual) start up.

The main point that someone else brought up are accurate I believe. But I
think debian also offers a rich experience with multiple version levels of
their distribution that one can play with (perhaps even break and learn, fix
and try again). I am probably a novice at the real power of things like
dpkg and apt; but one thing I have grokked is that apt is truly a remarkable
little thing and combine that with almost 4000 packages and 3 different
levels, and you have either the setting for a great one person shooter game
or one of the great Linux distributions of all time :)

Date: Sat, 17 Mar 2001 15:08:33 GMT

Hi. I'm kinda new to inetd, but have been using variants of *nix for years.

I installed RH7 from the RHL7 Bible book (workstation install with GNOME).
Works fine. But, when I try to telnet to the system from another machine on
my network, I can't. So, I did a port scan and found smtp, sun-rpc, spooler
and motorola cable modem test ports open (25, 111, 515, and 1024). Seems
kinda strange. No telnet (port 23).

According to my boot dialog, inetd does start. But, there is nothing in my
/etc/xinetd.d directory other than linuxconf-web, which again seems weird
(no xinetd.conf files and no xinetd.conf on my system).

This is a completely fresh RHL7 install. I did nothing to it but install and
check for telnet services.

What am I doing wrong? Was I suppose to do the server install?

Any help will be appreciated. Since I'm having trouble with my machines, an
email to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] would be appreciated.

Sorry if this is the wrong group or a newbie or FAQ question. I searched for
an answer but couldn't find any.

Some video cards have problems with the hardware mouse cursor at high
dot clocks. My cirrus-based laptop for instance. The fix in my case
was to put "Option sw_cursor" in the Device section of XF86Config.
Maybe your card has a similar option.
