Try this file:

        ~/Mailbox

Also, look in /var/log/maillog to see if there are any delivery problems.

You need to have the kernel header files. The simplest way to get these
is to simply install all of the kernel-related RPMs:

[insert RedHat cd into CDROM drive]
        mount /mnt/cdrom
        cd /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS
        for a in kernel*rpm ; do rpm -i $a ; done

I ran into this after attempting to custom configure my XF86 video,
bypassing it's defaults. It tried to force it to use the higher
resolutions that my video card and monitor were capable of. Everytime I
tried to force 1280x1024 (my monitor is 1600x1280 capable) it would boot
up flashing.

When I took the defaults, everything worked. You may still have to custom
configure your monitor, but try more conservative settings. This was what
I had to do on my installation.

Best of luck to you!

Now, if I don't type anything, after about 2 seconds, the monitor starts
flashing on and off. I've tried logging in quickly, and I can usually get to
the first prompt after password, but once the screen starts flashing, all
commands are frozen. The only way I could see how far I got was the
cntl-alt-delete sequence, but then it reboots. I figured it's just the X
Windows messing up on me with the new kernel, so I tried a cntl-alt-backspace
to exit out. However, I had changed my inittab file to make it start up in X
Windows every time. So when I try to exit out, it puts me right back in
again. I can't get past that first prompt to get into inittab to change
anything around. Is there anything I can do to stop it and get it back to
normal, or am I going to have to wipe everything away, and just start over
again? Oh, and I tried the old kernel to see if it would boot up that way. No
good. It starts loading up, then gives me a line saying somethign to the
effect of Kernel panic: can't load extended fs, or something like that.

The modules for 2.0.35 should be in /lib/modules/2.0.35, and the modules
for 2.2.0pre4 should be in /lib/modules/2.2.0. This is the location
make modules_install places the compiled kernel modules, and there will be
no conflict.

For a trouble free installation do what David said.

You don't need to download all of the X rpms. The
following are all you should need

    XFree86-3.3.3-1
    XFree86-libs-3.3.3-1
    XFree86-75dpi-fonts-3.3.3-1
    XFree86-devel-3.3.3-1
    XFree86-VGA16-3.3.3-1
    XFree86-XF86Setup-3.3.3-1
    XFree86-SVGA-3.3.3-1

If you are fortunate to have a largish monitor you may also
want the 100dpi fonts.

To install do

    rpm -Uvh XFree*

then run

    XF86Setup

when you select the video card (Millennium G200 8M/16M), also click
on the advanced button, and make sure "VideoRam 8192" is listed
in the box (or VideoRam 16384 if you have 16M), if it is not
click on 8M or 16M (i.e. specifically tell it you have 8M/16M).

There is a problem with autodetecting the video ram for the
G100/G200, so this is the crucial step. You can read all
about this at http://www.xfree86.org/ or in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/README.MGA after the installation.

After you have saved and tested the configuration you can delete

    XFree86-VGA16-3.3.3-1
    XFree86-XF86Setup-3.3.3-1

if you like, as they are only necessary to create your
XF86Config.

Also, XFree86-devel-3.3.3-1 is only really necessary if you
will be developing/compiling any X apps, but you should
keep it, as you will no doubt want to compile some.

I just thought I'd let you and the group know that this bug has not been taken
care of in win95 osr2 running fat16. I just ran a check by copying much more
than 2 gigs of stuff to the drive in question and the windows machines still
report 2 gigs of empty space along with a few very large data sets. I guess,
maybe, you have to be running fat 32 to see the true size of the samba
export. But, since there are currently no machines running fat 32, I can't
check this theory. Thanks for the information. It saved me lots of time
trying to figure out what was wrong with my Linux configuration when the
problem was "elsewhere." If anyone out there has a Samba directory larger
than 2 gigs exported to a win95/98 machine with fat32, drop me a line/email
and tell me if, when mounted as a network drive, the Samba directory is the
correct size......just curious.sendto<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>thanks

I've already reported this as a bug in RedHat 5.2, but have gotten no answer.
Here is my report
(http://www.developer.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=184):

I have a Toshiba 420CDT laptop (40 meg of memory, 2 gig
disk, 100 Mhz Pentium, 800x600 screen). It was running
RedHat 5.1 just fine. I upgraded to 5.2, and immediately
after fsck'ing the disks, something changes in the font
used that makes it less clear. I'm not sure I can explain
it, except that it looks like when the 640x480 mode is
displayed at 800x600, or when a computer tries to make a
bold font by overlaying the font at one pixel difference.
This happens whether I use the normal boot, or boot into
single user mode. It also happens when I build a custom
kernel, or even boot 2.1.129. This did not happen in
RedHat 5.1.

======= Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED]  11/26/98 19:05 =======
I debugged it further, and I believe that if /etc/sysconfig/i18n is
not defined (ie, the user has not chosen a default font), then in the
script /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit, /sbin/setfont should not be called. Thus
whatever font is loaded by the bios will still be used, rather than
always using default8x16.gz as the font. Also, as a side note, the
call to setfont should really be traced to the op console like just
about everything else is during the boot process.

I think as a workaround, I dumped the current console font and made that the
default font loaded. I don't have the machine with.

Subject: Caching nameserver causes delay in sending mail
Date: 5 Jan 1999 21:57:15 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Steve Snyder)

When sending mail on my RedHat Linux v5.2 system there is a 40 - 45 second
delay before the mail is actually sent. Receiving mail on the same system
is all but instantaneous.

This machine is the server for a small LAN. The delay is seen whether the
mail client is on a different machine or if the sender and recipient both
have accounts on the server. The delay period is the same regardless of
the client or of the originating operating system. (In Pine, running
on the server itself, for instance, 0% sent is shown during the delay.)

This server, corona.snydernet.lan, has dial-up Internet access. I
discovered today that no delay is seen if an Internet connection has been
established. I concluded that the delay is the timeout of trying to
contact my IPS's nameserver while no connection exists.

This is what my /etc/resolv.conf looks like (I added the leading spaces
for clarity):

        search corona.snydernet.lan snydernet.lan
        nameserver 127.0.0.1
        nameserver 199.3.65.1

That last IP address is my ISP's nameserver. If I remove that nameserver
entry, the delay is still seen in sending mail. Sigh.

Note that I'm not running a nameserver, which is why there's no reference
to it in /etc/resolv.conf. My name resolution is done soley through the
/etc/hosts file. I am running a caching nameserver, caching the data
gotten from my ISP while connected.

My new conclusion: the delay in sending mail is due to the attempted
lookup of corona.snydernet.lan in the cache. Sure enough, if I shut down
named, the delay is gone.

Anyone have any thoughts as to how I can have a caching nameserver *and*
no delay in sending mail?

Thanks.

Is the tiny cable from your CDRom drive plugged into the sound card? Does your
sound card appear in a pnpdump? If you are using RedHat, try setup and go to
soundconfig, work with it until you can hear Linus telling you how he pronounces

The kernel doesn't do much with character sets (there are some translation
tables for converting filenames in some filesystems). In 2.0.36 it does not
support ISO 8859-15 ("latin9"), the successor to Latin1 which includes the
euro sign.

The conversion table for Latin9 support is in the pre2.2 kernels already.

Supporting Latin9 is much more a user-space issue. See

Instead of wiping the current URL, just paste the new URL into the

Netscape accepts that as a command to go to the new location.

Hey buds -- the last place I go to look for facts is a commercial news
service. Right now they're on our side because linux is the only true
