Actually, that version sells at retail for $30.

I'll be installing a new Linux system at home very soon (it'll be
RedHat 5.2 on a Pentium 133 system). This will be my primary
workstation for the near future. I am using this machine now, but I
will be bringing my SCSI disks online as my primary storage, and
retiring the IDE disks I use now. I'm hoping the P133 can buy me maybe
another year - it seems to be fast enough. It is my hope that my new
SCSI-only system (Adaptec 2940UW) and fast disks will speed things up
a bit. When DSL comes to my area, this machine will probably be my
firewall.

Anyway, I'm trying to decide between sendmail and postfix. Since I'll
be doing a rebuild from the ground up, this would be a good
opportunity to bring a new MTA/MDA online. Any thoughts, positive or
negative?? Any war stories to share?

TIA

not true. the last place i worked at had a vhdl license for an
embedded mips processor. it was only 32 bit but still. mips are very
straightforward (which is why i really like them). clones would be a
snap if anyone wanted to do them.

Sounds good. Why don't you Jews and Christians step outside and kick the
shit outta each other. After you're done, come back and tell me who won. I
care, I really do.

Just activate the interface in netcfg. Or, a veteran C programmer like
yourself should have no trouble writing a short shell script to run chat
and pppd, right? Of course it's a control thing, that's why Linux is so
'hard', because YOU are expected to control the system. Also, your
username should be 8 chars or less, so you shouldn't have to type that
many chars.

If you could cd /usr/doc (Hey! isn't that the same as DOS?!!), you would
find many, many files explaining damn near EVERYTHING. If you could get
that pesky ppp link working, you would find megabytes more all over the
Net.

So, obviously you *did* get it at one point or another. funnily enough,
the more I used windows, the more often I got BSOD. =

BS. I don't believe this for a moment. What fun is it reading
unformatted html? FTP doesn't work over telnet, either, so really, what
is left? telnetting to sendmail and attempting to forge your address? Or
NOT using telnet, and reading/posting news with Outlook Express? =

Every driver I've ever installed in Windows needed a reboot afterwards.

So you are implying you've done this? More BS. Where did you get the
source? The same argument DOES go for Linux, because every distribution
ships with the source. I would also dare say that the average Linux
user DOES recompile the kernel occasionally (modules such as pcmcia are
easily left out at build time), furthermore, I would also say the the
average windows user has no idea what the kernel even is, nevermind
compiling anything.

Grow up and stop pretending , and please DO use that spell-checker.

Linux. Use the loopback devices (very handy when you're making a custom
cdrom and you want to check that the image is good before you burn it)

You just need to load the IMM driver for the Zip Plus.

I have to admit that it is not a 'constant problem'. However, I *did*
receive Windows binaries which were supposed to do some graphics whizbang
to drag me into the great opportunity of my life. Not too often, I admit,
about twice, but even one is more than enough. Especially that I have no
Windows to see them with... MS Word files are a little more frequent,
HTML junk is not uncommon at all and >10K ASCII mail is quite everyday
stuff.

Regardless, the amount of junk I received while I was using my real address
on USENET went beyond my limit. The amount I receive now does not exceed
the timeframe allowed to try to find their real source and complain at
their ISPs.

> you should use a responsible ISP that filters mail and you should do
> what you can to help them do it.

Well, why should *I* change ISP, pay for all the associated cost and
in general have all the hassle ? I thought that it was the spammer who
was the bad guy and should be punished, not me.

> All the means are available to you
> to take care of your own problem. It's your choice not to use them.
> That decision has nothing to do with the spammers.

Yes, one of the means is to use a fake address on USENET. My choice is
to use this method. This choice has something to do with spammers for
if there was no spam, I wouldn't a use fake address. I used my real
address when the net wasn't for telemarketing but for interchanging
information. I do remember when usenet spamming was not tolerated by
the net community - now email spamming is something 'we must live with'.
I do not want to get it.

> My opinion remains unchanged. These activities do nothing to reduce
> the spam levels nor to end the activities of spammers. I look forward

They *did* reduce *my* spam levels and on this side of the cable that's
what counts. In addition, if I do not receive that amount of rubbish
every day, then it's not wasting the Net.

Mail filtering does not do anything to reduce spam levels, nor does
it end the activities of spammers. However, by providing a real address
where you then delete the mail unread immediatelly after it reached
your machine is a very clear case of deliberately wasting Net resources.
I try to approach my spam problem from the angle of "if it doesn't
exist, I can't see it". You seem to look at it the "if I can't see it,
it doesn't exist" way.

They send you mail but you discard it. They don't send it to me.
Which one is better ? My opinion is unchanged too ...

> to the day that news servers are configured to require a correct

Well, if they are, they are not compliant to the RFCs ...
(AFAIK)

I'm not worried at all :-)

Subject: samba printing mystery
Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 00:47:49 GMT

Weirdness happening here. I set up samba today to print from my kids windows
machine to my linux box. Everything seems to work fine. The printer is shown
on windows and I installed the drivers. I print a test page and it seems to
work fine and spools to linux but nothing prints. The file just sits there in
/var/spool/samba. How do I get it to go from there to the linux spooler?
Should my smb.conf be pointing to my regular linux spooler? I've tried
everything. My testparm output seems ok. Load smb config files from
/etc/smb.conf Processing section "[homes]" Processing section "[printers]"
Loaded services file OK. I'm at a loss. I've included everything I can to try
to get some help with this.

Subject: samba printing mystery
Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 00:47:49 GMT

Weirdness happening here. I set up samba today to print from my kids windows
machine to my linux box. Everything seems to work fine. The printer is shown
on windows and I installed the drivers. I print a test page and it seems to
work fine and spools to linux but nothing prints. The file just sits there in
/var/spool/samba. How do I get it to go from there to the linux spooler?
Should my smb.conf be pointing to my regular linux spooler? I've tried
everything. My testparm output seems ok. Load smb config files from
/etc/smb.conf Processing section "[homes]" Processing section "[printers]"
Loaded services file OK. I'm at a loss. I've included everything I can to try
to get some help with this.
