I seem to recall that there is a list of such companies on the
FreeBSD web site (www.freebsd.org). I'm surprised that no one has
mentioned it.

I've only managed to crash it once. Using ZGV and having a totally
wrong chipset selected in /etc/vga ;) I'm sure I "could" have
fixed it somehow, but the ol' three finger salute was easier ;)

Subject: SCSI CDROM on an IBM Thinkpad .. I can't make it work
Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 01:20:45 -0600

Here is a quick list of what I have:

- IBM Thinkpad 750Ce with the docking station (dock I)
- SCSI controler = Futrue Domain TMC 885 Base address 0xca000 irq 11
- CD-ROM is IBM, ID=3 LUN=0
- RH5.2

Ok, so the problem is that I can't mount the drive. Here is what
happens when I try:

# mount -t iso9660 -r /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom
scsi0 channel 0 : resetting for second half of retries.
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.
scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 147, scsi0, channel 0, id

Request Sense 00 00 00 10 00
scsi0 host 0 abort (pid 157) timed out - resetting

Disc change detected.
isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev 0b:00 iso_blknum 16 block 32
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/scd0,

SCSI CD error: host 0 id 3 lun 0 return code = 18000002

Sometimes it will work. Most of the time it doesn't and I get these
error messages.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Indeed: that's the beauty of Unix (and therefore Linux): at its
core, it is very simple. That you can combine a bunch of simple
things to make something complex is its elegance.

At times I wonder if Ritchie and Thompson and the rest of the Bell
Labs gang knew what a thing of beauty they were creating. (Or if it
was just a good platform for Space War. :))

Subject: kernel 2.0.36 installation
Date: 11 Jan 1999 07:23:42 GMT

How come it is that when ever I compile my kernel right now 2.0.36 It
never loads the modules? I follow the directions just like they say but
it will never load the modules?

Jan 11 01:53:47 FranksPC kernel: klogd 1.3-3, log source = /proc/kmsg
started.
Jan 11 01:53:47 FranksPC kernel: Loaded 3305 symbols from
/boot/System.map.
Jan 11 01:53:47 FranksPC kernel: Symbols match kernel version 2.0.36.
Jan 11 01:53:47 FranksPC kernel: No module symbols loaded.

I am running a stock system. Just finished installing after my failed
attempts at 2.2.0pre6. *Boy that was a nightmare*

What does it take to get a kernel to compile and run on a RH 5.2 system?

Also does anyone know what the module-info file is for in the /boot
directory? Do I need to create one when I compile and install the new
kernel? If so how do you do it? I have never seen directions on this.

Also does the System.map sym link update itself? Or do I have to delete
it and make a new one to my newly created System.map file everytime I
compile the kernel?

Well, OK. I'll assume that the Linus can suck my cock post was an
oddity. Since you seem to actually want to learn Linux, I suggest
Running Linux. It's a very helpful book. My roomate has it and it helped
me out a lot. It'll probably run you $20-30, but it's worth it.

 Hi,
I am trying to run a scientific application on a linux system with
a Celeron 300a processor machine with 256 MB RAM ( 2*128 Meg DIMMS)
I have two IDE hard disks and on IDE CDROM in this machine....

I am getting errors such as follows ( on each and every attempt to
run the program)

Received signal 11 Unknown error 4294967295
Received signal 8 Unknown error 4294967295

And I haven't ever seen this error running the same
program suite on other machines..

I have run this application ( Molpro) on other unix machine... some
SGI machines and another linux machine to be specific... I have
never seen this message before... also I have run this same application
on this present linux machine once before and I didn't get messages
like this...

So all that leads me to believe that it could be a hrdware problem
with my machine... I dimly remember something about sig 11 and memory
problems... could anybody throw some more light on it... specifically,
if a memory problem is suspected, what other tests I can run on
my hardware to confirm or deny the existence of a hardware problem.....

BTW, I am not seeing a similar problem in running any other program...

     Please help...

sure, after ten minutes, you're cruising -- it ususally takes
about 45mins to realize you're going in circles.

i whole-heartedly disagree that linux/*NIX is harder to learn.
i found it a *much* easier environment to learn to DO things in;
especially programming. i used a computer for the first time
about 13 months ago (having been a carpenter for the previous
5/6 years). i installed linux about four/five months ago, having
no *NIX experience whatsoever, and i just got a job as a network

OK folks. Here's a configuration for a caching only DNS. The domain name is
bogus and the ip is 192.168.1.254. I assmue BIND 8 here also.
This is a very simple config and was derived from the howtos in quite short

In /var/named you should find as a minimum named.ca named.local
