One presses Ctrl-Alt-F[1-6] to switch to virtual text consoles 1-6, or
one boots the machine with "linux 2" as runlevel 2 in SuSE doesn't start
X until a local user enters "startx" at the $ prompt after logging in.

KDE is the default WM/desktop environment in SuSE, but the kdm login
screen should allow you to choose several other WMs (including fvwm95,
blackbox, Enlightenment, and twm) if you have them installed.

Actually I'm trying to run a dynamic DNS client for Linux from www.dynu.com.
It works great when I do it manually. It takes my dynamic IP address and
registers it on their DNS server so that www.whatever.com points to my
dynamic IP. I can do this as often as desired. However, what I really want
is to have the IP address get registered whenever the webserver reboots
(because I always connect to the next upon a boot).

But when I put the same script into rc.local it doesn't work! I even put the
exact paths in and try "chmod 777" on the files. Funny thing is that if I go
to "/etc/rc.d" and type "./rc.local" it works. What am I missing? The only
thing I could think of was that the Linux client they have (called DYNUPREM)
says "client is running. Press CTRL Z to exit" when you run it, so I thought
that maybe when it is being run in the background by rc.local that it is
waiting for a CTRL Z.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Flej

Subject: Which ethernet driver is running?

Question: How can I tell which ethernet driver is currently being used
for a particular NIC?

My company regularly upgrades desktop PCs, and I often grab some
discarded ones (current round of discards are PPro 200s and some early
PIIs), install Linux, and use them as servers-- intranet, mail, DNS,
NTP, NIS, what have you. Anyway, I'd like to compile some fairly
small, clean kernels for these machines but one of the problems I run
into is that I never know what chipsets are on the cards. We use
RedHat, and the default RedHat kernel usually works fine. However,
whenever I go to compile my own kernel I never know which drivers I can
safely compile out...

What I would like to be able to do is to do a default install, get the
box up and running, and then somehow determine that (for instance) the
DEC Tulip driver is the one being used to run the NIC at eth0.

Any ideas?

By bootstrapping it, of course.

You start with an OS that does exist, and build from there.
In this case, I believe that the OS was Minix.

Hi,

My /usr/src/linux/modules directory is empty. Is this normal?

I seem to be missing sr_mod kernel module necessary for CD-burning with
IDE hardware (insmod can't find sr_mod).

Is this normal? Should I get new linux sources? (Mine are from the
RH7.0)

Thanks

I know next to nothing about ColdFusion. Isn't it some tags that are
embedded in html so at the server side it can generate some more html?

Whatever the case why can't www.sql123.com and www.coldfusion123.com have
different IP addresses? (Your ISP gives you a block of addresses). Have the
external interface of the apache server on one IP and the external interface
of the coldfusion server on a different IP. Then attach both servers to a
hub, and attach the hub to your ISP's router. This way apache doesn't have
to forward anything to anybody. We have apache on one IP, bind (DNS) on
another, Citrix ICA/RDP on another, etc, etc, yet they all go out a single
internet connection via the ISP's router box.

I have only one internet IP to play with.
However, my Linux server is acting as a DNS server for the various web
domains. Let's assume I don't have Coldfusion for Linux and need to use
Coldfusion for Win2k which is on my MASQ machine (say, 192.168.0.10).

Is it possible to have www.coldfusion123.com point to 192.168.0.10 via
APACHE or IPROUTE2 or whatever, which is running IIS and coldfusion
application server.

And at the same time, have www.sql123.com point to a subdirectory on the
Linux server via APACHE.

Regards.

Hello,

you should make a kernel, which has build in modules for allmost every NIC
you could have,
why don't you use a standart kernel which comes with most distros, that
has everything as modules,
you can switch then NIC cards without a problem.

You can use lsmod to determine which modules are loaded and cat /proc/pci
to see what hardware on pci-bus is regocnized on
your mobo by the kernel...

Good luck

Hi,

that's OK, your compile/installed modules should be under
/lib/modules/<your.kernel.version>/ that's were they should be...

You didn't write what kernel (Version/selfmade/?) you use...

Good luck

insmod doesn't look for it. modprobe does.

You should get new linux sources ;-)

But if the module didn't come with your installed kernel (not the
kernel sources, note) then send in a bug report to redhat.

cdrecord version 1.9 installed from an rpm. The burning failed with iso
files that I made and preexisting ones.

The command line I used was ridiculously simple:

cdrecord -v speed=2 dev=0,0,0 file.iso

I did try different speeds and the device number changed when I tried
the cd-r . Nothing changed ie the cd was burnt with a gap in the tracks
at the beginning and it was unreadable always on other machines and
nearly all the time on itself.
