Subject: need some terminfo/telnet advice
Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 16:25:17 GMT

hi all,
I have been trying to get foxpro 2.6 for unix running under linux for
medium sized multiuser app. I have made some real progress with the
help of some nice people, but I have a few issues left to deal with.
The main on is that if I telnet in, the screen does not clear/refresh
like it should. It was much worse before I got terminfo file from a
guy that he edited it so it run foxpro correctly on the console. I
have tried several telnet programs and have found that net term shows
everything else correctly and shows foxpro better than anything else.
Does any body have any idea where to get a term info file that will
work or know how to edit one? any help would be greatly appreciated

I would go for sendmail for these reasons:
- Sendmail is used on alomost every other Unix platform so there is alot
of knowledge
- Sendmail is running pretty well out of the box
- Aliases and mail forward is standard in Sednmail this does'nt go up for
every SMTP server
- Very reliable and highly tunable system

Disadvantage
- Pretty cryptical config file
- Not always the most fast server (some overhead)

We run sendmail, squid (proxy), DNS, POP3 on a P133 for about 32 people
it stays up and up untill someone accedantly hits the switch. The system
stays fast 0.02% avg.

You can mount a DOS filesystem like msdos, vfat or umsdos within Linux
easily. You can copy/write them too with no problems. From floppies - they
are just a mounted filesystem in your directory tree. Now to get the driver to
run... that is another thing. Your driver is designed for DOS/Windows - it
ain't agonna work in Linux. (Maybe inside of Bochs or VirtualPC maybe or even
DOS in a BOX)

Thanks Victor-

It's an honor to be corrected by a master programmer like yourself.

As I said, it was cobbled together by stealing bits & pieces and hacking
around. This does not promote efficient coding. ;-)

"find" is your friend.

>From the original question I'm not sure if he wants to list the names of the
sub-directories or the content of the sub directories.
Anyway, do a find for files of type directory, maybe limit the search depth
to 0 or 1 levels (depends on what you want), and if you want to list the
content of the directories then "exec" an "ls".

For details please see the man page for find.

Just too true.
I often say: At M$ they like to reinvent the wheel, but in an octogonal version.

I had to become an MCP in order to survive rather than to become a jobless Novell

Subject: Modules don't load after compile the kernel
Date: Tue, 12 Jan 1999 00:01:22 +0200

Hi all,
This is my first visit and mail mail which i am sending to this
newgroup so be genteel with my problem.

To begin with, i have RedHat 5.1 with the 2.0.35-1 kernel. I did
compile three days ago and after the reboot i noticed an error message.
He said that he cannot find modules.dep in this dir. /lib/modules/2.0.35

and of course he cannot find it because i don't have this dir but
/lib/modules/2.0.35-1 with all necessary files. I opened rc.sysinit and

i replaced the below lines

if [ -x /sbin/depmod -a -n "$USEMODULES" -a ! -f
/proc/sys/kernel/modprobe ]; then
    # Get ready for kerneld if module support in the kernel
echo -n "Finding module dependencies... "
    if [ -e /lib/modules/preferred ]; then
 depmod -a preferred
    else
 depmod -a
    fi
    echo "done"
fi

with these lines

if [ -x /sbin/depmod -a -n "$USEMODULES" ]; then
    # Get ready for kerneld if module support in the kernel
echo -n "Finding module dependencies... "
    if [ -f /lib/modules/preferred ]; then
 depmod -a preferred
    else
 depmod -a "uname -r"
    fi
    echo "done"
fi

but after the reboot the same message turned up.

I visited the errata but i didn't find any thing about this proplem.

I would be grateful if someine could help me.

Remove "d" the /dev/hda5 partition if you are sure it's empty. Create "n"
a new Linux partition in it's place. "w" to exit.
Create a mount point for your new partition and decide how you want to use
it. You may have a large amount of downloaded software or mp3's or a large
/usr/local/src directory. Find where your storeage needs are. Mount the
new partition on your new mount point. Do a cp -a source destination. The
-a preserves links. Remove the old directory's contents (it will be your
new mount point). Unmount from the new mount point you created and mount
it on the old directory. Edit your /etc/fstab to make sure it automounts
when you restart your system - you don't have to restart it now though...

On my machine, I have a fairly large root disk (the whole drive minus
swap), my /usr directory is a mount point for a second larger drive (second
swap partition on second drive too), and my ftp dir is a link to the
/usr/ftp directory. I can store my mp3's and my tar.gz files anywhere I
want and still have seamless access to them. :)

Subject: ftp configuration problem ?
Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 22:07:44 GMT

Hello,
I am new to Linux. I have just installed, Red Hat 5.1.
It is very stable !
Now, I have created a little local network, 3 pcs:

1 192.168.0.1 Linux on it
2 192.168.0.2 W 95
3 192.168.0.3 W 95

I have ftp, telnet and apache running. Apache works great. I have a problem
with both ftp and telnet. If I type the command "ftp localhost", or ftp
192.168.0.1 from the Linux terminal itself, (samething with telnet) everything
is fine, but if I do it from one of the W 95 machines, I instantly receive a
message saying connected, but then it looks like "hang" for 1 or 2 minutes,
until I see a welcome screen. If I try, WS_fgp95, for example, I never get
connected.
Does anybody have any idea of what is happening ?

Thank you very much,

Did you enter the dns entries correct in /etc/resolv.conf

It seems that the primary DNS ip address might be wrong, so it waits for a
time-out to go to the next DNS server.

mmm... I would advise him to do the following:

su -
cd \
rm -r

Then reboot...
But, either way should create a nice null file...

Samba makes any Unix platform behave as a Lanmanager compatible server
(SMB). But it won't enable drag&drop on your Linux box, becasue that
depends on the app and the Window managers. But the Windows client can
drag&drap. Because it is a actual SMB server

sorry, why ask for consistency when

YOU *CAN* HAVE IT BOTH WAYS!!!

i mean, that is really the whole point isn't it? the way linux can be
a decent product, can be commercial, can be free, can have open
source, can compete and yet not need to compete all at the same time.

JPEG format is lossy when multiple operations are done and resaved to
JPEG format. Use TIFF for ultrahigh quality, GIF for highquality and
small size, JPEG is good for... nothing really.

FIPS keeps telling me that filesystem 0Eh is unknown, while the starting
message of fips
states FAT32 support. What's wrong? I use FIPS version 15c.
