No Sandy, I think you would have to rename jed to jedi to make it more
light-swordish <read that light-saberish> than wookie... <g>
Actualy though, I'm curious what menu driven editor was it that the
origianal posting of this thread refered to as vi???
I use vi on my unix account at work. and vim <vi improved> on my linux at home
and while vim seams to have many improvements over the origianal, I wouldn't
remember it for "menus" So if anybody knows what that origianal editor was,
and why anybody called it vi, I'd like to hear from you...
of course it probably only meant there were so many user scripts
calling vi that the admin of that unix thought it was easier to
alias some gui editor as vi than to explain vi to a lot of newbies
who they also didn't want to explain how to edit all those scripts
to... <just guessing...>

Subject: memory hole problem solved (Re: linux reports seeing only 15MB of 20MB
installed)
Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 23:59:50 -0800
Solving the Linux does not see, detect, report all of my machine's RAM,
memory, etc. problem.
I recently posted the question why doesn't Linux see more than 15MB of RAM
in my 20MB machine. It never occurred to me that this would be such a FAQ
that a search as broad as dejanews for "memory AND linux" would yield so
many relevant hits that my question qualifies as spam.
Despite the large number of hits, the information is only found in bits and
pieces and most of the messages match the wrong solutions with the various
sources of the problems. Because of this, I am posting the following debug
decision tree for the uninitiated:
Does Linux detect the first 64MB only?
Yes: You have the 64MB wall problem. Pass the kernel mem=128M at boot up.
Substitute your amount of installed memory for 128.
No: Does Linux detect the first 16MB only?
Yes: Was your kernel inappropriately (e.g. you have a late model
machine) compiled with the "Limit memory to 16M option set?"
Yes: Recompile w/o this option
No: This needs to be set, I have a buggy 386. (Well then, 16M is all
you get.)
No: Does Linux detect the first 15MB only?
Yes: You have the "memory hole" problem. Is there a setting on the
BIOS set-up screen to turn off the memory hole?
Yes: Turn it off!
No: Will a BIOS upgrade solve this problem?
Yes: Done!
No: Patch the kernel.
I ended up having to take the final branch in the decision tree (patch the
kernel). It was educational. In fact, I still haven't gotten everything
working right, but the memory hole problem is solved.
The details on patching the kernel:
The patch is an unofficial modification by Christer Weinigel (wingel at
hog.tl.ctrl-c.liu.se). It was written for 2.0.29. Get it here:
ftp://rvs.ctrl-c.liu.se/pub/wingel/linux/memory-hole-2.0.29.diff
I ran the patch on my 2.0.36 source tree. It blew hunks (rejected a section
of code) in setup.c, but the other files were patched ok. I'm not a
professional programmer or a comp sci student, but the rejected hunk doesn't
look critical. It only applies if you tell the kernel that you've got an
Intel 82437 chip present. Don't forget to re-run 'make config' when you're
done. (It took me two days to figure this out!) On boot, pass the new
kernel your total memory and the location of the hole. E.g.: mem=20M
hole=15M,16M
I hope having all of this in one place helps eliminate some confusion among
the less experienced as to which solution applies to their particular
problem.
Now if only I could figure out how to tell Linux to look in 2.0.36-1 instead
of 2.0.36 for the modules. ... ;-)

Subject: Re: sharing netscape 4.5 files between linux and nt4 - almost there,
Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 09:50:03 +0000
I have now so far able to share the downloaded news messages between linux
and nt4. Here is what I have done:
NEWSGROUP SERVERS
My news directory is /home/john/.netscape/news/
It turns out that this directory only stores the news servers that you have
specified in Edit/Preferences/Mail&Newsgroup/Newsgroup Servers menu. The
directory above will contain the .rc files. The rc file naming convention
is .newsrc-<nntp_server> for insecure connections and
.snewsrc-<nntp_server> for secured connections.
On the other hand, the newsgroup servers that I have specified in ns4.5 nt
are stored a file named fat under the directory in
<mnt_point_to_nt>/"Program Files"/Netscape/Users/<user>/News/. The fat file
lists down the corresponding .rc file for each newsgroup server. Note that
in ns4.5 linux, the directory itself (/home/john/.netscape/news) is
analogous to the fat file in ns4.5 nt.
I did not do a directory soft link to where netscape stores the .rc files
in nt4. The reason is that ns4.5 nt assings weird names for the .rc files,
thereby not corresponding to the file naming convention that ns4.5 linux
requires. So what I did was a soft link to EACH .rc file.
DOWNLOADED NEWSGROUP MESSAGES
ns4.5 linux stored the downloaded newsgroup messages in
/home/john/.netscape/xover-cache/host-<nntp_server>/ for each news server.
(Replace host- with shost- for secure connections). I can't seem to find
out where is this setting (xover-cache) controlled.
ns4.5 nt stored the downloaded newsgroup messages in
<mnt_point_to_nt>/"Program
Files"/Netscape/Users/<user>/News/host-<nntp_server>/ for each news server.
(Again, replace host- with shost- for secure connections).
Then that's it!!!! I even can see the threads that I "Watch Thread" in
ns4.5 linux!!!
Note though, after marking at least one message as read in ns 4.5 linux, it
deleted the soft link to the .rc file and recreated the .rc file for that
specific news server where you marked the message as read. This means that
when you shift between ns linux and nt, the number of msgs read and total
will not be the synchronized, since they are keeping separate copies of the
.rc file.
As for netscape mail, I still have the problem of <folder_name>.snm showing
as a folder under Local Mail. I therefore have an Inbox and and Inbox.snm
folder appearing as separate folders.

The best thing to do would be to read the RPM Man page... (man rpm @ the
console) but this will get you started...
rpm -ivh [name of rpm file] will install (technically, all you need is the
-i, the other part I just prefer because I like to see what is going
on...) a new application from an RPM.
Also, if you want to upgrade an existing RPM, try
rpm -Uvh [name of rpm file] and that will upgrade the particular package.
Again, the v and the h in the command line are optional... do what ya
like.
Once again, I must suggest that you read the man page. It will help you
understand more of what is going on and alot of other cool options that
rpm has to offer.
Hope this helps...

I understand completely wrt RealPlayer. I *did* get it installed and
running under RHL 5.2, but it is *not* easy.
Yet, I had a different experience with installing a Diamond Viper 330
video card. Plug and play required roughly 3.5 hours to install working
software under Windows 95, not to mention the 0.5 hour to do the
hardware installation. The software installation under Red Hat Linux
5.2 and SuSE Linux 5.3 (Euro) took 30 minutes each. Not to put too fine
a point on it, plug and play sucks.
(Oh, and I returned a US Robotics/3Com/Megahertz PCMCIA Winmodem. When
a bloody modem is OS specific, the manufacturer doesn't get MY money.
The Viking PCMCIA replacement modem works just fine.)

It is perfectly normal to have recycler (Recylce Bin) folders on all your
partitons if you're running with NTFS... maybe FAT, too? At any rate, these
folders are Winblows system folders, so it's a very bad idea to try and delete
or move them.
Have you checked MicroSoft's knowledge base regarding your blue screen?
If I were you, I'd get to a DOS or 9x machine and make a boot floppy (From
DOS or a 9x DOS shell, type format a: /s) Copy fdisk and format on there,
and boot your sick PC with it. Use fdisk to blow away your uneeded partitons
(I'd blow them all away if you're not worried about data loss) Create
partitions for Windoze... with the free space that's left, create an Extended
partition with no logical drives (you'll use this for Linux).
Install NT, then install Linux... you can use Linux's LILO to boot both OS's
if you want (in this case, let Linux install itself in the master boot
record). Or, you can use NT's bootloader to boot both OS's (see the NT
bootloader mini-howto at www.linux-howto.com - DO NOT let Linux install in
the MBR if you want to use this option).
I also highly recommend Partition Magic 4.0. Once you try it, you'll wonder
how you ever got anything done without it - add/delete/move/resize/convert
partitions on the fly.
Good Luck!
