What do you want to use? I recommend using Window Maker. Grab the source
code at http://www.windowmaker.org/ untar and unzip it in a separate
location. Read the INSTALL file and do the necessary ./configure, make
and make-install. There are some other options you cna do as well. Just
read the INSTALL file very carefully. There is another file that will
install your startup in .xinitrc and THAT is what determines which window
manager starts in some instances.
If you have any questions, email me. Check out the many window managers
at the following URL.

Good luck.

I'm running Red Hat 5.1 and am wondering what driver I'm using for
networking. I've got a IBM token ring card (I know, you don't have to say
anything about token ring). It's running like a champ though. I was
wondreing what driver is being loaded to use the card and am not sure how to

I've been having problems writing to my zip disks too.

mount -t vfat /dev/hdd4 /mnt/zip

can read from the disks fine, but any writing ends up corrupt. No idea
what the problem is, but I was going to post a query to a newsgroup too!

Hope somebody else can help?

Date: Tue, 29 Feb 2000 08:53:15 -0800

In the man pages, it states that you can redirect
the serial port to an "xterm -t" and it will
interpret the serial input as Tektronics 4014
graphics.

I have an old and slow DOS box running ZStem
as a Tektronics 4014 interpreter and would like
to run Linux on that box.

How would I go about redirecting serial port
input to an xterm? Do I use pipes? I'm just starting
with Linux, so this may be a fairly straightforward
process.

Thanks for the help.

It's not so easy to do with wu.ftpd because you'd have to set up binaries
for ls etc. in each user's home directory.

However proFTPD has a built-in "ls" command, so that with proFTPD you can
just put "DocumentRoot ~" in the config file and then your users will be
confined to their home directories.

I'm not sure if this is going to work, but you could (if you have a 2.2.x
kernel) use source-based routing. Then you could route packets not
originating at the firewall with the ftp server, i.e. they are from the
internet, through the ADSL. Packets coming from the firewall/server would
be routed through the SDSL instead.

Go look at freshmeat for iproute2 and related tools if you want to try this
approach.

ProlinkJ, the multi-platform OS and Embedded Toolkit.

If you are an OS or embedded developer, this is the perfect toolkit for you.
Written In Java, it will run on any Java 1.1 enabled platform.

Consists of a GUI and command line Linker / Locator, and GUI OS descriptor
Builder, a Hex Editor and a few other useful tools.

The Linker / Locator supports OMF files and libarary files. The GUI version
also builds a PRINTABLE MAP FILE. The Linker / Locator also generates
exported and fixup information, which is perfect if you are developing your
own executable format.

The Descriptor Builder builds all descriptors types (Code, Data, TSS, Gates,
LDT's). It also GENERATES CODE IN C OR ASSEMBLER, as well as creating a
binary file.

Diald can be configured to use different timeouts for different kinds of
requests and to independently limit which kinds of requests bring up the
link.

Subject: Glibc2 and _xstat problem.
Date: 29 Feb 2000 17:16:45 -0000

Hi Folks

I am in the middle of a move to glibc-2 and have hit the _xstat problem.
In particular netscape 4.7 reports:

./netscape: error in loading shared libraries: /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6: undefined
symbol: _xstat

Searching around the net I find a fair bit of discussion on this, including
this excerpt from the Apache FAQ:

/quote
Missing _xstat symbols are mostly due to a broken libc
installation, e.g. compiling against glibc 2.1 headers and
linking with glibc 2.0 will lead to such an error.
/unquote

In fact I am using glibc-2.1.2 and this does not include _xstat, viz:

nm -D /lib/libc-2.1.2.so | grep xstat
0009e584 T __fxstat
0009e9f0 T __fxstat64
0009e6e0 T __lxstat
0009eb10 T __lxstat64
0009e428 T __xstat
0009e8d0 T __xstat64

The only solution I have found is a suggestion to kludge the library by
adding the function `void _xstat() {}'. This however has its own problems.

I initially started to compile the library but this failed after a couple of
hours with:

gcc -nostdlib -nostartfiles -r -o librtld.os '-Wl,-(' dl-allobjs.os ../libc_pi
c.a -lgcc '-Wl,-)'
gcc -nostdlib -nostartfiles -shared -o ld.so \
          librtld.os \
          -Wl,--version-script=../ld.so.map -Wl,-soname=ld-linux.so.2
/usr/i486-pc-linux-gnulibc1/bin/ld: cannot open linker script file ../ld.so.map:
 No such file or directory

Unfortunately a null file of this name is not good enough as it results in
a parse error, and I have been unable to identify what the contents of
`ld.so.map' should be.

My questions therefore are:

a) Is there a known solution for the _xstat problem?

b) What should be in the glibc `ld.so.map' file?

Any help on these problems or pointers to other possible solutions will be
much appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

Subject: Where's my book?

Several weeks ago I was in the library, looking at
books on Unix programming.

In one book I saw a table of process
characteristics. There were roughly thirty
characteristics listed. The table stated, for each
characteristic, the effects of a fork, and the
effects of an exec. Most characteristics remain
invariant after a fork, and quite a few remain
invariant after an exec. But not all of them.

Like a fool, I put the book back on the shelf. The
library is not large, and the number of Unix books
is not huge. I thought I would have no difficulty
in finding the book again, if I ever wanted to
examine the table. I'm embarrassed to admit this,
but I did not even note the book's title or its
author.

Well, the day has come when I want to examine that
table. I went to the library recently, and I tried
to locate the book. I spent quite a while in this
endeavor. No success.

I suppose that, in the aggregate, the folks who
read this newsgroup have read every Unix book ever
published. Can someone help me identify the volume
containing the table? The title would be welcome.
Or even the author's name.

I'm told mouseconfig should select the correct protocol for IMPS/2 - however, I'm now
running a later version of XFree86 (3.3.9?), so they may have been fixed in my version.

Also, I am a bit cautious about using config programs designed to configure the whole
of the
XF86Config file just to change one thing - I suspect that they change things I don't
want
them to - for this I just edit the file by hand. I'm told you can use the
/usr/sbin/mouseconfig program to change just the mouse protocol too.

Please let us know what works.

Max.

not sure what problem du jour you are talking about but usually you set up

has been running for months. Alternatively you buy one of the commmercial
Xservers which might be a bit easier to configure - only tried Xmetro and
it was pretty straightforward when I started with linux.
Which wm you use should be determined on the last line of your .xinitrc
file which you should find right in your home directory.

xmms == x multimedia system
sorta like winamp - plays mp3s, you can feed it URLs, etc.
has skin support, all the major features like eq, play lists, etc.

Thanks a lot for the advice. I do want to change to Linux, mainly for
price reasons. I would much rather pay 25 than 100 for an OS!! Also I
have heard that Linux is a lot faster.

Thanks again

Uhm...what do you mean "connect to netscape or redhat"? Neither of those
are ISPs.

How are you trying to "connect to netscape"?

Ok.. first of all I guess nobody here understands what you're trying to
do. Do you use a modem?
Who is your ISP? What are the error messages?

Forget about using Linux if all you're looking for is a cheap drop-in
replacement for Microsoft Windows to run your existing applications on.
This will not work!

So long as the video stream hits addressable memory at some
point, there really is no copy protection as such.

All an end user has to do is exploit whatever framebuffer
direct access features thier OS may have (DGA/directX).

In this respect, all software DVD decoders are essentially
the same in terms of security.

Check the font path section of XF86Config file. It's right at the top of the
file. The line you have to add is like this:

    FontPath "unix/:7101"
