Seems to me that the classes.zip that belongs to the JDK are not in your

taper works fine with my Exabyte 2501 SCSI drive and kernel
2.0.32 but I haven't managed to make it work with my
Colorado 5GB IDE drive and kernel 2.2.1 so I've been using
tar instead.

Actually, my ThunderLink 33.6kbps modem is "jumper-selectable". What this
means in this case is that the jumper is for PnP. With the jumper in the
non-PnP position, the modem is "configure once". Which means that once I
configure it using DOS-based software, it will remember that configuration.
Pretty nifty, eh? And of course, I could have left it in PnP mode and used
isapnptools.
A good deal for $30. Especially in an area where 56K just ain't gonna
happen.

Just to add to this, tar has the newish flag "I" which will use bunzip2
the same way "z" uses gunzip. So,
tar -xvIf file.tar.bz2
will do the same-ish thing as
tar -xvzf file.tar.gz
This is true with whatever version of tar arrives with SuSE 6.0

Fine thanks!
I recompiled it (had to specify the system because it couln't find it
automatically, changed a function header, it was unhappy with a signed
integer
versus unsigned in the system header file... but not a great deal).

Well everything seems to be OK again. The CREATE_HOME flag was in the
/etc/login.defs file (just commented it... I'll have to create users
home myself, I guess, in the future).
As for the path, well, it's a bit more complicated : simply adding the
path into the .tcshrc of root solved the problem at home (RedHat 5.1)
but not at office (RedHat 5.2). Still a bit annoying...

Subject: Automate dns/NIS update
Date: Tue, 09 Mar 1999 11:13:13 +0000
Hi,
I am currently trying to write a script that will automate adding new
hosts to our dual NIS/DNS environment.
I have completed a menu based script that asks the operators ..
1) To which domain they want to add ?
2) What is the new hostname ?
3) What is the IP address ?
4) What are the aliases ?
It then adds the data to the dns .data file and looks if a .rev file
exists for the domian. If not it creates a new .rev file with the above
info then adds this to the named.conf file.It then updates the serial
number in the .data file to todays date or if already todays date it
increments the version by 1.
A refresh of dns is then performed.
While this works okay I now have to add the NIS part as well and I can
see problems occuring in the future with new domains being added etc.
Is there a tool that exists that can make managing a DNS/NIS environment
easier ? I have seen a few tools like dlint but it seems that is more
for managing an existing dns setup.I am specifically looking for a tool
that can add new hosts to dns without having the operators going and
manually updating the files.

Here's one option for the read part:
Package: dbview
Description: View dBase III files
Dbview is a little tool that will display dBase III and IV
files. You can also use it to convert your old .dbf files
for further use with Unix.
.
It wasn't the intention to write a freaking viewer and
reinvent the wheel again. Instead dbview is intend to be
used in conjunction with your favourite unix text utilities
like cut, recode and more.
Available in source and binary form from your friendly neighbourhood Debian
mirror.

How about having LILO on the MBR of the Jaz disk point to two kernels on
two
different / partitions.
i.e. sda1 = 50M / partition - for HOST-1
sda2 = 50M / partition - for HOST-2
sda3 = 500M /usr partition - should be same for both hosts
sda4 = 200M /home partition - should be same for both hosts
sda6 = 50M swap partition - should be same for both hosts
Basically all of your local PC stuff would generally fall under the /
partition, generally under /etc somewhere. The only thing you may need
to fiddle would the the /usr/X11R6/bin/X symbolic link for the different
X servers required. A simple few lines in the appropriate rc script
could
do this easily on startup.
When compiling the kernel for the "other" / partition, you would have to
use "rdev" on the compiled kernel to say which partition is to be used
as
root.
This way you wouldn't need to do so many "if HOST1..." & "if HOST2..."
test in your startup scripts.
Basically, just make sure that all of the machine specific configs
are somewhere on the / partition. You may need symbolic links
from the /usr & /home partitions at times.
Hope this helps,
brian

Subject: Why doesn't my ldconfig work?
Date: Tue, 09 Mar 1999 06:51:00 -0500
For some reason (I'm hoping just a stupid oversight on my part), my
ldconfig never seems to work. I'm running Slakware 3.6 (libc5) and my
/etc/ld.so.conf points to the right directories - for example
/usr/local/lib... However, whenever I put any shared libraries into
/usr/local/lib, i.e., those for the RealPlayer, and then run ldconfig,
the libraries aren't seen. Until now I've fudged the solution by
sticking the libraries into /usr/lib (or /lib), but I'm presently
getting failed dependencies trying to install libcdaudio.rpm- and the
libraries it wants are in /usr/lib! What the heck is going on? Why
doesn't linux see my libraries? I've tried everything within my
knowledge, including setting the LD_LIBRARY_PATH, to no avail. Now I
just want to understand what's going on.
BTW, the same packages install just fine under RedHat 5.2. So, what
gives?
Thanks to anyone who can shed any light on this issue,
Tobias

Subject: Looking for Linux 2.2.x rescue disc with NTFS r/w enabled
Date: 09 Mar 1999 13:58:46 +0100
Hi there!
In order to repair a damaged winNT4 installation, I'm looking for a
Linux 2.2.x kernel boot and rescue discs set with enabled read/write
support for NTFS.
Please let me know if anyone has done those floppy images.
Many thanks in advance!
