This seems correct. Imagine the problem is occurring *twice*: the
first fills 50% or so of /var, but only the second time you actually
see the error... might be worth a look.

How does one get hacked in redhat 6.2 when you have ipchains up and
running
blocking ports 0-1023, 5432, 6000, and 8080?

Hi,
I assume that you are using the vesafb framebuffer driver, since
you indicate above that you are switching to graphics mode with vga=791.
The vesafb driver does not support mode switching, so whatever mode you
set with the vga= paramater the one you are stuck with, and fbset will
not be able to change anything. If you use one of the fb drivers that
do support mode changes, then fbset will change modes no problem. I
have used fbset with matroxfb and rivafb, and it changes modes correctly.

What package was it? Sounds to me like you've 'lost' your shared libraries.
Like, if the install deleted /etc/ld.so.conf then ran ldconfig .
You can get it back by using the system rescue disk (you did make one didn't
you?) or if not most distro's have one on the CD.
Mount the root partition and have a look for ld.so.conf, or possibly
ld.so.preload - if that exists and has a non-existent file in it the same
symptoms would occur.

You could start your program from a script like:
#!/bin/sh
/path/programname
echo "Job Completed" | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
#end
you could also put a read command in if your job is going to be different
each time: ie

I configured them as usual but if I start to compile with
make zImage it claims some minutes later something about

I've never had such problems and I'm experienced linux-user.
May someone help?
Did redhat change something that you have to install a special

Thanks a lot in advance

Hi,
I have a soundblaster live which uses an Ensoniq 1371 chip (alsamixer
calls it a SigmaTel STAC9708/11). I have been using the alsa drivers to
get sound, which works OK. Although I can hear sound and everything,
performance is not great. Mp3's skip a lot if I'm doing other stuff
(using netscape, doing any sort of disk stuff, etc.), and the bass is
quite scratchy. Is there anything I can do about this?

That's exactly why. It's the same reason that /dev/console belongs to
her. She's in the position to see and hear the output.

OK. That's usually a winmodem coopted into squawking. It's a chip on
the mobo. You need to load the driver (maestro.o).

Well, that's a killer. Your modules is compiled with MODVERSIONS, and
your kernel isn't. Go back and recompile it (the MODULE, not the kernel).
Nevertheless, I think that modprobe will recognize the problem and
strip the extra version identifier in the module.

But DID THE DRIVER LOAD? Go look. (i.e. keep reading the howto, you are
missing the important bits, the ones which tell you what is going on
- you have to understand what it means for a module to be loaded and
how to see that it is, and in what state it is)

I also dump all mails that have the symbols $ or ! in the subject line.
Also any with three capital letters in a row in the subject. There are
also certain words in the subject line that will trigger the
defenses, "hot" and "money" being two of them. After that it gets down
to awarding points for content. Any mail with a MIME MS-* attachment

The result is not too bad. I might try telling people with $ and ! on
the brain to try again without the emphasis.

tcpdump
If you can get a copy of Richard W. Stevens "TCP/IP Illustrated Vol. 1",
then you'll be sorted, as they say.
Depending on which NIC cards you're using, you may have some diagnostic
tools available (I know Realtek 8139 and 3Com 3C509 cards can do this).
As a quick and easy test, you can connect two machines with a crossover
cable (assuming you're using RJ45 and UTP), boot DOS from diskette on
the 2 machines, and run the diagnostic programs.
Assuming that all works, then you can progress to tcpdump running on a
real OS. One last warning though, I once had a problem with a PC that
worked fine with the DOS diagnostics, but refused to work with Solaris.
It turned out to be the "Plug and Play" OS in the BIOS CMOS
configuration.

Subject: Multiple SCSI controller cards
Date: Fri, 24 Nov 2000 23:38:49 GMT
Hello,
(Before continuing, it may be important to know that my motherbaord has an
onboard adaptec AIC7xxx controller which controls my primary hardrive, tape,
and CD drive - everything there works fine)
I am trying to add two Adaptec AHA1740 SCSI EISA controller cards to my
system. I have set the cards through the EISA setup (bootable configuration
disk that came with system) as follows:
EISA slot #3:
Interface Mode: Enhanced Mode
I/O Port Definition: Disabled (Enhanced Mode)
DMA Channel Definition: Disabled (Enhanced Mode)
Host Adapter BIOS: Enabled @ Base Address C800H
SCSI Device Configuration: Enhanced mode configuration
EISA slot #4:
Interface Mode: Enhanced Mode
I/O Port Definition: Disabled (Enhanced Mode)
DMA Channel Definition: Disabled (Enhanced Mode)
Host Adapter BIOS: Enabled @ Base Address CC00H
SCSI Device Configuration: Enhanced mode configuration
I can only use the above addresses for the host adapter BIOSes since I
also have a Specialix RIO card in the system which apparently uses all of
the DXXXH address space - the configuration program will not let me use any
other addresses for my SCSI controllers other than the ones shown above.
When the machine boots up, I see both controller's BIOSes and the drives
connected to them come up (I have 6 identical drives - 3 on each
controller):
.Adaptec AHA-1740 BIOS v1.40
.Copyright 1992 Adaptec, Inc.
.[Enhanced Mode]
.
.Target 0 - QUANTUM FIREBALL540S - Drive D: (81h)

.[Enhanced Mode]
.
.Target 0 - QUANTUM FIREBALL540S
.Target 1 - QUANTUM FIREBALL540S
.Target 2 - QUANTUM FIREBALL540S
Then (on a virgin RH7.0 install) I invoke the command:
'insmod /lib/modules/2.2.16-22/scsi/aha1740.o'
and get the following messages:
.Configuring aha174x at IO:3c80, IRQ 11

. sdc: unknown partition table
.SCSI device sdd: hdwr sector=512 bytes. Sectors= 1065235 [520 MB] [0.5 GB]
. sdd: unknown partition table
I was then able to 'fdisk' these three devices and setup the partition
tables on these drives. So, now the above "unknown partition table" lines
read:
. sdb: sdb1
. sdc: sdc1
. sdd: sdd1
So, now my questions are these:
1) What does "Extended translation disabled" mean above, and is it a
problem?
2) Does the "unable to allocate IRQ for adaptec controller" refer to the
second controller that I am not able to access? (which is shown above as
using the same IRQ as the first one - IRQ 11). But, the EISA setup program
does not give IRQ choices for 'Enhanced Mode'...
As a note, these were working in the same box while running the SCO
Openserver O/S. However, I had these cards set to 'Standard Mode' (instead
of 'Enhanced' - I read that Linux supports the AHA1740 in Enhanced Mode).
Therefore, on the SCO setup I had the IRQs set to 9 and 10, the I/O Port set
to 130H and 230H, the DMAs set to 7 and 6, and the adapter BIOSes disabled
(there was disk array software controlling these cards). So, there were
enough IRQs before, and I have not added any other cards to the box since
switching to Linux... actually, I removed an AHA1740 card that used to
control the boot drive for SCO (the onboard AIC7xxx controller wasn't used
under the SCO configuration).
Any help or direction on this would be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

I think you should type `chmod u+s filename.ext` as root
to set the suid bit. I think the reason `chmod +s' won't work
is because you can also set a group id bit in much the same
manner.
Hope this is correct,
Ben

This is a bug in logrotate on Mandrake 7.1 It keeps making more and more
and more ( twice as many every time logrotate is called ) in
/var/log/mail and /var/log/news. They are all 0 length files, but they
use up all the inodes, so no new files can be created. Erase all files
in these directories, AND go to the Mandrake site and UPDATE logrotate.
Really, you should be going there regularly ( use MandrakeUpdate or
whatever) to keep your system updated. Next time it will be some cracker
who has erased all your files because you left buggy security features
unfixed.

Subject: parport / kernel message problem
Date: Fri, 24 Nov 2000 23:52:19 GMT
I've been having a small problem with the IEEE-1284 autoprobe, and don't
know how to resolve it.
Right after I compiled the kernel and modules, and configured the
/etc/conf.modules file with parport as described in parport.txt, I saw the
name of my printer, an Epson Stylus Color 800, appear after parport1 during
bootup after the modules installed. Of course the printer was turned on at
that point.
This is (and has been) my parport configuration:
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
options parport_pc io=0x3bc,0x378 irq=5,7
Mysteriously, the printer's name no longer appears, even though I have the
printer online during bootup. I made no changes to conf.modules other than
to add a sound driver / module on irq 9. What I see now is:
parport1: PC-style at 0x378, irq 7 [SPP,ECP,ECPEPP,ECPPS2]
parport0: no IEEE-1284 device present.
parport1: Unspecified, Unknown vendor Unknown device
Parallel printer support has been compiled as a module.
The printer prints fine in linux, as well or better than it did before the
change in the bootup message.
What could account for the "unknown vendor Unknown device" message? I know
that the printer is IEEE-1284 compliant.
I've already tried recompiling the kernel, which didn't make any lasting
difference. What I mean is, the problem eventually fixed itself and I saw
the "Epson Stylus Color 800" appear on the parport1 line during bootup.
It'd be that way for a while, until an error occurred such as: a file
wouldn't print correctly or the printer being turned on before the system
was turned on (causing the system not to start properly). Then the printer
ID during bootup vanished. The problem, along with the solution, has been
intermittent.
I'd be grateful for any assistance or suggestions anyone could offer.
Sincerely,
Gary Krupa
