Hi!
I am (still) having problems setting up and running X. I think i followed
the relnotes instructions that come with new X 3.3.3.1 correctly but still
have XF86Setup and X say it can't find something. Here is how I installed
it. I all went smooth without giving me any errors.
I have Riva TNT card and slackware 3.6
mkdir /home/X11R6
ln -s /home/X11R6 /usr
cd /usr/X11R6
sh /var/tmp/preinst.sh
chmod 755 extract
cd /usr/X11R6
/var/tmp/extract /var/tmp/X*.tgz
cd /usr/X11R6
sh /var/tmp/postinst.sh
these are the errors i am getting:
Kabal:~# XF86Setup
Couldn't determine where u have XFree86 installed. If u have XFree86
properly installed, set the XWINHOME environment variable to point to the
parent directory of the XFree86 bin directory.
and this is what i get when i try to start up X
Kabal:~# startx
execve failed for /usr/X11R6/bin/X (errno 13)
_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 2

giving up.

i will appreciate any ideas u guys may have... i've been strugglin with it
for a week now and still can't get it to run. thx

The software you got can come from ftp (the_name_of_the_software.tar.gz)
then u have to unzip it($ gunzip file.gz) and run tar on it ($ tar -xfv
file.tar).Or you perhaps got it from a CDROM, or a floppy, or anything
else ...
To run well, the MAKE command needs a file 'Makefile'.
You have to look for Makefile in the directories where the softawre is
located.
And, this Makefile will probably need a file named 'configure', or
'config'.
1) If you find the Makefile directly in the directory /directory (this is
a stupid example, don't go in /soft :) ), so run $ make /soft/Makefile.
But the configure file probably doesn' t exist. The reason is simple:
this file tells make how to compile your software, and you may want to
see what will be done by editing the file configure.in .
Find this file configure.in, and run $ autoconf /directory/configure.in .
Then, it will generate a file named 'configure'
Then, go in /directory, run $ make and pray !
2) If you find only a file named Makefile.in, don't run autoconf on it !
Try the command $ ./configure !!!!!!!!! don't forget the '.'
before '/' !!!!!!!!!!!
If it doesn't work, it has to be something like that, so try ./config or
check the readmefile.
i hope that will help you to install your software.
Welcome in the world where you have to do everything by yourself !

There is dhclient for DHCP client and dhcp for ISC DHCP server. A
locate on dhcpcd found nothing. I am not in a DHCP environment, but I
see no reason why it shouldn't work out of the box.
YaST has a place for configuring DHCP client. I don't know how you go
about seting up as a DHCP server.

Hi,
How can I install slackware 3.6 on a second hard drive? I am familiar with
linux. I have installed it about a dozen times before, but on one partition.
I can't find my hard drive when I run "fdisk"
I have win98 on a 2GB partition and 340MB partition on the first drive.
The second drive is currently fat formatted (to be deleted) 1GB.
when i run the boot and root disks. I noticed
hda: hda1 hda2 <hda5>
hdc: [PTBL][621/64/63] hdc1
Is this hdc my second drive?
I tried doing fdisk hdc, but i didn't get the fdisk program running. It
looked like there were some partition table errors although the drive is OK
with windows.
Any clues? regardless of my errors how can i install linux on a second hdd?
how can i use fdisk on the second hdd that is?
Please email
Thank you for your help

I have been very happy with my HP 6MP. It is a postscript printer and
therefore I can easily print to it from any UNIX system, Macintosh, and I
was even able to get Winbloated to print to it. I bought mine about 1.5
years ago for around $900 plus tax. It is expensive, but worth it for
high quality fast output. I also recommend using decent paper, like
Hammermill, with it as you can actually see and feel the difference of the
printed output.

Me too. What I like about it is that there's so much there (five CDs),
including what some other distributions call "power tools" and charge
extra.
Also, v.6 has Star Office 5 right on the CD.

If you have taken some nornal precautionary steps you can boot from an old
kernel
at the lilo prompt.
If you haven't, boot from flop, and mount your root file system. The either
copy an older
kernel over /vmlinuz ( or wherever you put it and called it ), or add
another entry to
/etc/lilo.conf to point to an older kernel.
Remember that when you mount the root file system after booting from floppy,
your
hard disk root becomes referenced from wherever you mounted it from.
ie: mount -t ext2 /dev/hda1 /mnt
Therefore lilo.conf is on /mnt/etc and you must tell lilo to use the config
file in /mnt/etc.
As far as why it won't boot, it sounds like the installation went wrong
somewhere.
Maybe and error message flashed by that you didn't see.
Once you are up again under the old kernel, try a remake with
make dep; make clean; make bzlilo; make modules; make modules_install
