You've got to be root to *configure* PPP in redhat, but you can just
use "usernet" (or the appropriate ifup scripts) to start/stop PPP as a
user.

Subject: PPP Problems
Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 13:50:38 -0600

Hello, I just got Linux about a month ago, RedHat 5.2, and I was wondering
something about PPP.

Before I start, I have already read ISP-Hookup-HOWTO, PPP-HOWTO, and even
NET-3-HOWTO. I have tried using the scripts under
/usr/doc/ppp-2.3.5/scripts and nothing seems to work.

When I run the ppp-on script, I have it echo before and after the call to
pppd. I only see the echo before. That's OK. I have an echo in the chat
script (/usr/doc/ppp-2.3.5/scripts/ppp-on-dialer) before and after. I don't
even see the before.

I think one of the problems is I have no idea where my modem is hooked up
(ttyXX). It's a USRobotics 56k fax voice, etc, I'll spare the BS.

All I need to know is how to hookup to my ISP (PDQ.net) using any friggin
protocol that will work. I'd like to try to stick to PPP, no SLIP or DIP,
please. Thanks!

How can I run Netscape Conference under Linux, is there one, has someone run

If not, who can reccomend me a good conference program for Linux, is there a

One way to do that for sure is from a Linux boot floppy that has the dd
command available. The command to clear the MBR (first sector of hard
disk which includes the partition table) is:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1

A Redhat boot/install floppy should work. If not download tomsrtbt from
here:

http://www.toms.net/rb/

It's a good disk to have around anyway. You have a choice of Linux or
DOS install versions - meaning you can make the floppy disk from within
either OS.

It sounds as if Partition It changed the partition table. Boot Linux
from a floppy and run fdisk, and make sure hda3 is listed as "Linux
Native". If you use LILO, you might also want to rerun LILO.

hang on. communism is not evil, it was the communists that where evil. the
actual communist ideals a quite nice and utopian (unless of course your
wealthy). Remember such things as trade unions,co-ops, credit unions all
spawned from communism. the ideal of communism is simple social inclusion.
the "communists" on the other hand such as Stalin,Lenin, the eastern block
leaders etc where evil not for the belief in communism (if they had one?).
they where evil because of the manner in which they ruled. GNU actually
embodies the good aspects of communism . labour is its own reward, the
resources and skills of a community should be available to all who
participate in the community etc.
in any case its a bit disrespectful to compare communist regimes to a
tiff over software code. especially when one considers the numbers who died
under these regimes

OK, I'd like to thank everyone who helped with my GS/BJ problem. I found

Works like a charm now.

Anyone else who may be having troubles, that is my suggestion for fixing it.

Hey, you're lucky. My version of lpd doesn't tell me what's wrong, it just
dies silently.

Reboot your machine and then run lpd. And don't kill it off, otherwise
you'll get the same problem when you try to reload.

The problem comes from lpd not releasing the port when it dies. While it
may be possible to help the kernel along in finding the errant port and
killing it (probably by telnetting to it) I haven't tried that option. I
just rebooted.

Subject: Getting programs to recognize new GTK-1.2 on RH5.2 system

I've got a relatively fresh install of Redhat 5.2 on my system and I
wanted to install programs that require something like GTK > 1.1.x. I
didn't think this would be a problem, since I had downloaded the
recently released GNOME 1.0 packages (which included GTK-1.2.0) and
installed them. In fact, glint/rpm shows that GTK-1.0.6 & GTK-1.2.0 are
both installed. I tried correcting the links in /usr/lib (which *is*
included in /etc/ld.so.conf) to point to the newer versions of GTK and
re-running ldconfig, but 'gtk-config --v' still reports '1.0.6', so the
program compilation fails. What can I do to get the system to recognize
GTK-1.2.0?

Thanks!

EVER give Linux access to my windows drives again!

This is the story:
Linux has somehow been messed up bad. I get the (admittedly stupid) idea
that "hey, just like windows, format and reinstall!"
So what do I do? I try to remove as much info as possible from the
filesystem, and by mistake end up deleting some things from /mnt/ as well!
So now all my work is lost...

I NEED to get a backup device,

Regards,

One Sad Loser
