Subject: Inconsistent partition information
Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 02:06:38 GMT

HI,

I installed Linux on a 8G harddrive. Because it came with preinstalled
software that had two partitions, the first about 6G and the second 2G.
I repartitioned the first partition to give 2G for Win98, 4G for Linux
and the rest for swap (almost 100M, which is too much... the next smallest
is 32M and I have 64M RAM) using FIPS. After installation, in Linux,
I took a look using fdisk and got the following information, which I
can see is inconsistent:

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 318 2404048+ b Win95 Fat32
/dev/hda2 875 1092 1648080 f Win95 Extension (LBA)
Partition 2 has different physical/logical endings:
     physical(1023,239,63) logical(1091,239,63)
/dev/hda3 319 860 4097520 83 Linux native
/dev/hda4 861 874 105840 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda5 875 1092 1648048+ b Win95 Fat32

As you can see, partition 2 doesn't seem to be correct.
it has repeat entry and it has inconsistent values.
(BTW, what is LBA?... this partition came in the original
system), or inconsistent(?) id type.

QN: what should I do about this? Should deleted one of the
entries? Which one? Modify which one? Do I use fdisk to do
this?

Can anyone help? Thanks a lot.

Kernel 2.2.3 has all kinds of support for Parallel devices, but as of yet, I
have been able to find a configuration that will run my old, discontinued,
Eagle Exabyte TR-3 Parallel port Travan 3 drive.

Does anyone know of a driver, or a combination of kernel options and drivers
that might actually get this beast running, and backing up my Linux boxes.
This is the last Windows-era piece of hardware that I have been unable to get
running under my now complete M$ free LAN.

Eventually I am just going to buy a completely Linux supported Travan drive
(any suggestions?), but I would at least like to give this a good shot.

Surely someone out there has one of these tape drives, and has gotten it
spinning?

Any help is appreciated.

I have one of these on an old machine and I can get it to work without
anything special. This is with Debian already installed.

The driver source code: extra/bpcd.c includes this:
----
...
The driver will attempt to detect which parallel port your
backpack is connected to. If this fails for any reason, you
can override it by specifying a port on the LILO command line
(for built in drivers) or the insmod command (for drivers built
as modules). If your drive is on the port at 0x3bc, you would
        use one of these commands:

        LILO: bpcd=0x3bc

        insmod: insmod bpcd bp_base=0x3bc
...
----
I don't know if the port number listed is a standard one, or just an
example. But you could try this during install (after options just put
bpcd=0x3bc). If this fails, maybe you could figure out the actual port
is on some other way...

I have a one way cable modem installed and working on my Linux box. It was
a pain to get working but it works like a champ now. Mine is an internal
card made by General Instruments. A guy a found on the web wrote a driver
for the board for linux and it works fine. If you don't have a driver you
will have a hard time getting it to work, Unless it is external and connects
through a NIC. You should have no problem then.

try #dpkg -r alsalib. More general way is to run dselect. It removes much
faster than installs.

make sure isapnp isapnp.conf is somewhere in one of your bootup scripts

Don't forget to put in the stats for your soundcard when you add it into
the kernel.

You use PPP. :-)

The ISDN line card should just be another device to Linux, which can be
accessed the same way as /dev/ttyS0 or /ttyS1 would be for a dial out
modem.

There's a pretty good how-to provided with most distributions - have a
look for it.

Ok, let me get this straight, since I'm not sure we are talking about
the same thing. Are you saying that I can rlogin _to_ an NT machine,
whether or not someone is on from console, start a job running in the
background on the NT machine, log out, and come back in the morning
expecting it to have finished by using otherwise idle CPU time over
night? I know NT can let you use rlogin, etc. to connect to another
machine, but that isn't what I was talking about. I was talking about
many users being logged on to, or running processes on, the NT machine
at the same time. From what little I know about the NT operating system,
that would require fairly radical changes, ``some kind of unix compatibility
package'' (as you put it.) For my purposes, if two or more people can't use
the same machine at the same time, it is using an unacceptable poor operating
system.

Mine has always done that too. It seems that the input and output gain on the
card get set to maximum when it's initialized. If you have a mixer program that
lets you adjust the gain settings, turn them down. You don't need them set that
high. If, on the other hand, your card doesn't have adjustable gain, I don't
know what to tell you. (Other than, if you hear noises that vary with what
you're doing on your computer, disable your microphone input when you're not
using a microphone.)

Indeed. I posted a summary of Lexmark printers and Linux yesterday to
a related thread; while the 5700 and 7000 can be run in bw-only now,
they are some of the few exceptions to the rule: Lexmark Color
Jetprinters are not usable from Linux.

Lexmark *Optra* printers, however, are, and furthermore Lexmark has
provided some support to Linux customers in the form of C source to a
Unix Optra 40/45 alignment/loading utility.

If your files were on a FAT drive, then you _should_ be able to recover
them.

Have you tried with Nortons undelete? or even the M$ product which is a
cut down version of the norton one?

bzImage stands for, literally, Big zImage.

It's used when your kernel gets too large {over 500k, or thereabouts} for
zImage to work.

Unless compiling using "make zImage" gives an error about the kernel being
too large, then don't both with "make bzImage'.

Do you have a default route setup pointing to your internet device {modem
link or network card?}

If not, then you need one.

How can I change the resources for xterm and/or nxterm so that their
colors match the default Linux console colors? When I try rxvt, the
colors seem to come out right, but I've been getting core dumps when I
try to run `mc.' Also, if I run
        nxterm -tn xterm-pcolor
I get correct mouse functionality, but the colors are far from what I'd
like. Thanks much.

The third-party cdj670 Ghostscript driver (which is probably the best
driver to use for this printer) supports a numer of options, according
to the readme for it:

The driver implements the following switches:

    -dPapertype= 0 plain paper [default]
                 1 bond paper
                 2 special paper
                 3 glossy film
                 4 transparency film

Note, currently the lookuptables are not suited
for printing on special paper or transperencies.
Please revert to the gamma functions in this case.

    -dQuality= -1 draft
                 0 normal [default]
                 1 presentation

    -dRetStatus= 0 C-RET off
                 1 C-RET on [default]

    -dMasterGamma= 3.0 [default = 1.0]
__Note__: To take advantage of the calibrated color-transfer
functions, be sure not to have any Gamma-Statements
left! If you need to (i.e. overhead sheets),
you still can use the gamma-functions, but they will
override the built-in calibration. To use gamma in the
traditional way, set MasterGamma to any value greater
1.0 and less 10.0. To adjust individual gamma-values,
you have to additionally set MasterGamma to a value
               greater 1.0 and less 10.0

Waiting for time out in the dns resolve.
add the "wintendo" machine into the /etc/hosts in the linux box.

Windows does not include a x-server software.
You have to install a X environment into the windows machine.
When yo do a telnet you are able to use only text mode.
