Jason,
This one is so simple, that I am afraid people may ignore it.
Ufortunately, I am at work and my Linux box is at home, so I am quoting from
memory, but just try typing
gcc --version
or
gcc -v
and you should get an answer. You can also check the gcc man page by typing
man gcc
in your, say, xterm window (if you are running X) or on the console and
check the options to the gcc command. One of them should display the
current version.
Hope this helps,
Andy

Larry,
Sorry did that step too but I forgot to mention it. That was the last
step, updated my lilo.conf, then rebooted. After that point it just looped
in a reboot or just hung.
This happened when I had 3.5 as well.

Or for non-redhat users, http://www.linuxhq.com/ has a very good list of
things (as always) that you'll need to get. (With a new kernel comes a
pile of new and replacement toys -- many of the old ones won't work.)

As I said earlier it worked but I can only access the drive if I boot

If I boot without the syjet turned on, I am unable to mount the drive.
Is there an explanation for this?

No. Generally, you create a PostScript file and use ghostscript as a
printer filter. I don't know if there exists tools to help create
PostScript files under program control -- *I've* never had any need for
such programs, although I wrote such a thing in Tcl/Tk as part of
cross-platform support (look at my Home Librarian package
(http://www.deepsoft.com/HomeLibrarian/Download.html).
If you are just generating plain text output, just create a plain text
file -- the 'smart' print filters automagically pass plain text directly
to printers than can do plain text and use an ASCII to PS program for
PostScript printers.

I think something like this happened to me and it was something really weird.
Look up the file with the struct that started this whole mess. The line number
is listed. I think the line above it was a (supposedly) empty one. Remove that
line and compilation should now succeed.
Might be off though. It could've been a different package, but either way,
removing an empty line in a source file shouldn't do any harm...

The kernel HOWTO provides some general guidlines for updating the
kernel. When you unpack the kernel source there is a README file in the
linux directory, check that for how to build the kernel. also in the
linux/documentation directory read the Changes files, this describes
kernel changes and other dependent packages that will need to be
upgraded, compiler, linker, libraries etc.

gcc -v
will tell you the version and where it is installed. 2.7.2.3 is the
lowest acceptable version (according to my kernel 2.2.1 documentation).
Many, many ftp sites will have various versions of gcc. If you
want .rpm files then the home site for your distribution is the best
place to look. Otherwise check for a mirror site near you on www.gnu.org.

Depends on what you mean by **free**.
Gnus within XEmacs is GPL'd so it can be used for some things for no cost.
It uses "movemail" to do the popping.

In reply to the original post, you should be able to share a swap
partition between two distributions. It's a kernel level thing. If you
can't, than you probably have an evil distribution (if it comes with
Microsoft Bob, that's a good sign).

Subject: GS drivers for Epson Stylus 640 - disappointing
Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 18:20:56 -0600
My experience with the Ghostscript drivers (described below)
for Epson Stylus Color printers is a bit disappointing.
Maybe my expectation (based on news postings, and pages like
http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/printer_list.cgi?make=Epson)
has been too high.
In that case, I would encourage others to be more skeptical.
But I would be happy to hear that I am wrong.
And even happier if somebody knew how to fix my problem:
In image areas where one of the main colors (CMYK) is used only
in moderate amounts (light colors, light grey, or mixtures),
this color is not printed as a light cloud of dots,
but as pattern of thin wavy lines - highly visible!
It is not unusual to to have large image areas
where these lines are only about 1/40 inch apart.
The distance between the lines seems to be
a (decreasing) function of the color saturation only.
Increasing the resolution (number of dots per inch)
just increases the dot density on each line.
Getting 40-100 lines/inch on 20-50 percent of a printed image
is not what I would expect from a 720 dot/inch printer (driver)!
I printed PS files on an Epson Stylus Color 640,
using the stcolor or uniprint drivers (trying each stc*.upp),
from Ghostscript 5.50, under Linux.
I tried all the options that seemed relevant,
printed files from a variety of sources,
read the relevant sounding docs, FAQs, and newsgroup articles.
What I managed to do is to get reasonably good colors etc.
(adjusting e.g. the color transfer functions;
those in stc600*.upp seemed pretty far off),
but the problem with the ugly wavy lines remains.
This does not happen with the driver from Epson
(a colleague printed the same images under Windows).
Is it just that one should not expect too much from gs drivers,
and that most Linux users are easily satisfied
when it comes to printing?
Any constructive comments would be highly appreciated.

If somebody is syn flooding you it's trivial to spoof the source
address, since your reply doesn't need to get returned to them. Note
someone can always spoof a source address, but if they're actually
trying to connect they'll have to have some way of snagging the replies

Subject: want to create an exec zip archive for dos
Date: Wed, 17 Mar 1999 07:21:31 +1000
hi,
i need to email files to users with dos/win pc's
i want to create a selef extracting archive so that the end user only
has to run the file
that i send them in order to extract the real file.
i have found the utility 'zip' which creates a zip file compatible with
PKZIP, and there is
also a 'unzipsfx' file which can be prepended to create a sleef
extracting arch, but this
file cannot be unzipped on a dos pc.
is there a utility like zip2exe that will create a dos compatible
executable from a linux machine ?
thanks

do "gcc -v" to see your current version. I'm running 2.7.2.3, but I also have
2.9-redhat-d90810 from Cygnus' GNUPro Toolkit. The 2.7.2.3 is used to compile
the kernel.
