What is the best method to access an Access database from Linux?

An Access database has a front end written that the users are not
willing to give up. But I want to convert web servers that currently use
the database from NT to Linux. How can I best get the Linux server to
read the database on another machine.

ODBC looks like a dead end. I could use JDBC and the JDBC-ODBC bridge,
but how do I create a Data Source on the Linux box?

There appear to be a couple of three-tier solutions, but these look like
they'd be quite a pain to set up. Are they?

Has anyone had any experience doing this kind of thing? How big a hassle
is it? Should I just give up and go back to NT? Thanks for any help.

Subject: Another RealPlayer G2 question.
Date: Thu, 03 Jun 1999 10:48:01 -0400

Hello all,

  I have a strange problem with RealPlayer G2 that I haven't been able
to figure out. I have checked the FAQs, HOWTOs, etc., with no luck
finding anything for this specific problem.

 I've gotten the Realplayer to work when logged in as root just fine, in
Netscape 4.6, I click on a realaudio or realvideo link and it starts
right up and plays beautifully. However if as a normal user I click on
the same link, the RealPlayer pops up on the screen, and doesn't load or
play anything.

 I set everything up the same for the user as I had for the root. Other
sound functions work fine for the normal user - WAVs, audio CDs, and
other sound fx.

  My first thought was that it might be a file permission problem, so I
went to any Reaplayer files I could fine and changed the permisions so
they are read, write and executable to all users, but that didn't do
anything.

 I am using Redhat 6.0 (upgraded from 5.2) with kernel 2.2.9 on an AMD
K2-400. It is quite possible that I overlooked something obvious, as
I've only been using Linux since late March and claim only enough
knowlege about Linux to be dangerous.

 Any help would be appreciated.

Be sure that you have "%s" in the definition of RealPlayer G2 files
in your Netscape Preferences/Navigator/Programs.

Please,

I installed  wine_0.0.990523-1.deb and wine-doc_0.0.990523-1.deb and
all the files required. The installation did go through very well.

However wine does not run. It complains about a function not

For example:

$ wine -winver win95 -managed /dos/windows/notepad.exe
sigaltstack: Function not implemented

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks.

Cheapbytes doesn't have $2 SuSE CDs, but Linux Central and Linux Mall
both do. YAST is free. They started with Slackware's install program
and made YAST out of it, so they don't have any choice of making it
free. The offical 5 CD version of SuSE can be had for $35 and comes
with a better manual than RedHat with 3 CDs. No contest.

Well, actually Sun just changed the license requirements so that the
blackdown group could get legal copies of the full development kit and
test suite. All of the work is being done by volunteers. Last I heard,
there were a couple of Sun programmers that would answer their
questions, but no direct work was being done by Sun. The blackdown web
site and their mailing lists have more up to date info. I unsubscribed
after it became apparent that my employer was backing down and not
going to move to Java.

Is it printing to a file? If so, and if you have used printtool to set
up your ptinter, you can probably print it with the command

lpr [name of file]

Look in the Office50 subdirectory of your home directory for the print
file.

Also look for a check box "Print to FIle" in the print dialog box of
StarOffice. Uncheck this if you have a PostScript printer.

Hope this helps.

Not quite what you're after, but you could put a real database on Linux and
have Access access it remotely.

Oracle would be my pick, but then I'm an Oracle DBA (or was).

You might try mounting the RedHat CD and run the rpm

Dear Linux Administrator,

We are currently beta testing our web-based 'Linux Administrator'
knowledge test. The format is multiple choice. To take the test,
simply go to http://www.tekmetrics.com/betapins.html. The rest should
be self-explanatory.

Upon completion of the test, you will be scored 1-5 (1-Novice,
2-Beginner, 3-Intermediate,
4-Advanced and 5-Master) and be provided the percentile that you fell
into, based on the others
who took the test. The test is actually comprised of two tests of 16
questions each (that's two
chances to make the top ten!). Any feedback you can provide us on the
quality of the questions and
the test itself would be greatly appreciated. You will be given the
opportunity to provide feedback
on each question as it is administered as well as at the end of the
test.

Any information you provide will be kept anonymous.

If you have any problems getting to the site, or have any questions in
general, please feel free to
contact me. We hope that you enjoy the test and look forward to your
feedback!

Also, feel free to try out any of the other beta tests while you're
there. Thanks in advance for your
help and good luck!

What do you mean by "assimilate"? Did you download the files in
binary (rather than text) format? What is the response to
"file filename.tar" or "file filename.tar.gz"?

Hmmph.

(Comment: this is not kernel _hacking_; that would involve changing

uhmm, pine is a mail client. Perhaps you mean sendmail?. Anyway, I would
probably go to the qualcomm website and download qpopper for a pop3
deamon, and then edit the inetd.conf to reflect this.

Note that most mail servers will reject mail being sent throught them
whether it comes from their domain or not, unless configured otherwise.

Your problem is that you are attempting to modify a string literal. That is
not allowed. If you use gcc -Wwrite-strings, it will warn you about it. A
minimally functional version appears below:

#include <stdlib.h>

char host[] = "no_host     ";
char *phost=host;

if (argc != 7)

memset(argv[5],'\0',strlen(argv[5]));

/*

*/
servent=getservbyname("exec","tcp");
sd=rexec(&phost,servent->s_port,user,passwd,cmd,0);
if (sd == -1)
   {
   puts("Error in rexec.");
   exit(4);
