This sounds like a job for Gnus in `agent' mode.

By default, (n)mh looks at your local mail spool when you run `inc.' You
can set it up to do POP, but it has to be compiled in. Since exmh is
only a front-end for the mh system, all it really does is run the
various (n)mh programs in the background.

>From the nmh INSTALL file:

6) Edit the file `mts.conf' (installed in the nmh `etc' directory)
and make any necessary changes for the mail transport interface
   you are using.

The default `mts.conf' file assumes you retrieve new mail from a
local (or NFS mounted) maildrop, and send outgoing mail to a mail
transfer agent (such as sendmail) on the local machine. If you
have enabled POP support and you want this to be the default method
of accessing new mail, you will need to change the values of the
   variables "servers", "pophost", and "localname".

I don't know about "multiple personalities" but nmh is a very flexible
system; for instance, you can specify to inc the spool file from which
to pick up mail and the mail folder into which to drop it.

For filtering, I would suggest procmail. There's nothing you can't do
with it.

It could be the size of the drive no linux seems to like my 8.4 gig
Seagate either. I solved the problem by using another 6 gig dirve to
install mandrake on. I used the latest Mandrake release 5.3.
Make sure the slash partition is near the start of the disk ( the
first partition is good)
You might also want to create a /usr partition as well. This seems to
work fine for me :
250 megs slash
120 megs swap
500 megs /usr
500 megs /opt
500 megs /home.
This should give you plenty of space for other operating systems as
well.

I think I got it this time but have all kinds of errors on unresolved
symbols for many modules. I think that might be the way I used the 'make
menuconfig' (a message I got directly that sender preferred that over 'make
config' -- I now agree).

I also used 'make zlilo' which was cleaner. This time 'make modules' and
'make modules_install' tend to be cleaner.

I still, however, have the problem of not being able to do 'netstat -M'
eventhough I have a clean recompile of the kernel with the IP forwarding or
masquerading options selected in either 'make config' or 'make menuconfig'.

Any more assistance for this poor, less than 1 month on linux?

I am having problems with Partition Magic not being able to recognize
partitions. After emailing the tech support, they said one of my ext2
partitions needed to be deleted, then re-created. Problem is, the one that
needs to be deleted has ALL my linux OS on it (slackware 3.6).
Unfortunately, this problem happened because I tried installing LILO on the
superblock of this partition, then making this partition bootable. That
didn't work, LILO reported it as "operating system missing" and now
Partition Magic complains about differing CHS settings...but I digress. My
question is, can I move all my data to the other linux partition, do my
stuff on the problematic partition, then move all the data back without any
problems? Is this possible?

I'm using Windowmaker .51.2 which I downloaded from a RedHat mirror as an rpm,

I'm also using RedHat 5.2 and had a few run ins with Gnome, but 1.0 seems OK
and KDE1.1 seems OK.

My error in Windowmaker, which is my favorite X Desktop, setstyle produces the

following error:
setstyle: error in loading shared libraries
:undefined symbol: _register_frame_info

This has been a problem since one of my .50 upgrades. The FAQ mentions
something similar, and talks about a mismatch between the compiler for the
wmaker binary and the system libraries. But it doesn't mention what shared
libraries are used, other than libPropList.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Need help. I've just installed Linux 5.2 and I'm in the process of
installing DB2 5.2 Beta for Linux. During the installation it doesn't give
me the ability to choose TCP/IP properties (even though TCP/IP is installed
and configured for the the Linux box). Is there any reason why I don't get
the option to choose TCP/IP? Also, I mounted the CD and I'm running the
install from ./db2setup. Is this correct or should I be running the install
from the Packages/RPM? If so, how do I run the install from the RPM? I know
how to point the RPM to the CD-ROM but what then?

Is there a way I can verify that TCP/IP is enabled on the linux box other than
pinging addresses?

Sorry, but I'm a novice here and need some answers. Thanks

I'd be curious about this one myself. Though I'm not sure how necessary it
is to take the time to compile it. Tarball binaries are available at
xfree86.org that should work fine on Slackware.

If the above doesn't work, try typing in:
   echo -e "\033c" <RETURN>

That usually works for me. I believe that what it does is send an
ESCAPE C to the terminal or terminal emulator, which for the very common
VT100 is a reset sequence. I.E. the binary characters that were spewing
out accidentally sent a legitimate command to your terminal or terminal
emulator to go into some weird graphics mode, and you need to get out of
it. (Not that you can't see what you're typing except the numbers).

I am having this same problem. Sendmail is being delayed when I boot up and
it is also causing havoc for my web server.

When I originally set up my networking, I called the hostname
'dilbert.holmes.net' and the domain name as 'holmes.net'. and everything
worked fine.

When I changed the hostname to 'dilbert' and the hostname to nothing, this
is where it stopped working right. I did the change because when I tried to
look for 'dilbert.holmes.net' on my workstation (which is connected to the
net via cable modem) I got confused results since a domain already exists
for 'holmes.net'. This wasn't a problem for my static IP address of
192.168.0.100 on my internal network.

So, currently the /etc/sysconfig/network file: HOSTNAME=dilbert
is correct.

The /etc/hosts file has:
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
192.168.0.100 dilbert
192.168.0.12 ratbert
192.168.0.1 phb

The /etc/lmhosts file looks like this also.
The /etc/HOSTNAME file has the one line in it: dilbert
The /etc/networks has one line in it: HOSTNAME=dilbert

Do I need a domain name, or will a simple hostname do?

Anything to fix this problem from anyone would be greatly appreciated!

Subject: Security/Password Questions
Date: Wed, 17 Mar 1999 06:07:54 GMT

Hi All,

I'm hanging a Linux machine off of the Net. So, naturally I'm reading on
security/firewall and testing security measures, etc. My question is about
cracking login passwords.

I've tried a few "password crackers" here.

I took one called "JTR", and used it on my /etc/passwd file in "plain old
crack" mode.

It almost immediately reports and verifies all accounts that don't have
somewhat complex passwords. Actually - ones with lousy passwords.

But, my questions is this:

I intentionally put a rather simple password on the root account to see how
fast these programs might find it. However, even though the root password is
more simple than the other user passwords - the cracker program has failed
(after 14 hours) to find the root password. Does the system do something
"different" to the root password as opposed to other passwords?

I'd also like to know about any "crackers" or the like and/or means of
obtaining root (especially root) and user passwords from my own system.

NOTE: I am NOT using shadowing to my knowledge, (unless some sort is
implemented by default). This is a straightforward RHL 5.2 install with no
bells, buzzers or whistles. Just studying security before I put my thingies
out there! And for those who care, here is my reason for focusing on passwd
files:

My friend and I are doing this jointly, (going to serve the www). I logged
into his Linux machine and DL'd his /etc/passwd file for analysis to prove a
breach. I then cracked his own "regular user" login info from his
/etc/passwd file and telneted to his box. I then downloaded all his *passwd*
files. Unfortunately, during a massive mget, my /etc/passwd file got
overwritten. Hence, upon reboot, I could not log into my own system without
repair :-)

Any and all help is appreciated.
