Subject: Newbie Question Re: WindowMaker
Date: 18 Mar 1999 21:59:34 GMT
I am running the DR3 version of MkLinux on a Power Macintosh 6100 (PPC 601
64-bit).
I have been using the K environment with no worries, however I have been
trying to broaden my (limited) knowledge by installing the WindowMaker
files that come on the DR3 disk (Which by the way contains Red Hat RPMS for
WMaker 0.14).
After having used Kpackage to install the Windowmaker RPMS, running "wmaker
install", and tweaking the .Xclients file (which of course is all totally
new and foreign to me since I have been used to pressing buttons, dragging
icons for the last 10 years!), I am now able to get the WindowMaker desktop
to appear after entering "startx".
No worries? My problem is that the menu (the wmaker control panel thingy)
does not appear on the desktop when I click and hold down the mouse button
anywhere on the desktop. The only thing I get is one dock button, labelled
"Workspace" and an Xterm. I have also slapped an "exec asclock" in the
Xclients file and of course, now I get asclock appear as an appicon.
Now, the documentation I downloaded off of the WM web site, (which might as
well be written in another language) suggests that the file one edits to
tweak what the menu contains is called:- /GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/menu.
I have this file and it contains all the menu items (as far as I can tell),
but I suspect that this file is not being read during the startx startup
process, thereby resulting in no menu available on the desktop.
Could someone please explain to me as explicitly as possible (hold my
hand!) what I need to do to get this file to be read during the startup
process, thereby allowing me to access the menu when I hold down my mouse
button anywhere on the WM desktop
Remember, I have been raised on the Mac GUI, so pathnames, linking, editing
scripts, compiling etc is all new to me, so be as gentle as possible.
Anyone caring to offer their suggestions - your advice would be greatly
appreciated.

Subject: Alternative web searcher ?
Date: 18 Mar 1999 22:54:12 +0100
Hi,
I was searching the web for non computer stuff, using altavista,
it's not hard to understand that altavista is owned directly or
indirectly by M$ (the second way should be more their usual way !), i
wanted to talk about that in Linux's NGs with dejanews when just out of
curiosity i hit the 'about the company' links and finally get on the
M$ logo through the 'partners and alliances' link, ok, for this one,
M$ is also there. Knowing M$ attitude to force people to do what M$
think is good for them (! beuark !) ... i tried to use other search
engine ... but i don't have links of that kind in my bookmark.
Anyone have some good web searcher that are not owned by M$ ?
(By good i mean with a pretty good data base)
Note that it's for non computer things, for my pretty Linux
computer, i have the complete ! (me happy)
Any help appreciated, because i do care about the information i
retrieve from the Net,
Fred.

Note that there are a couple of clock programs out there. It's the
clock that's described in section 8 of the man pages "man -S 8 clock",
usually executed by full path name /sbin/clock, has to be run as root.

Ah, ICQ.. yes..
Well, what there is at icq's web site is the java version... It runs on many
platforms, including Linux. Basically, if the OS can run JAVA, it can run
linux..
There are a couple other ICQ clones out there, work over the ICQ network, but
look a lot different.
go to http://www.linuxberg.com and check out what they have.

There's a package called 'cdlabel', written by Paul
Coates, who lives somewhere in the UK. You should be able to
find it on the Web; that's how I found it.
Also, there's a set of teTeX templates called 'jt-0.1',
which you can find at Freshmeat.
I personally like the output from jt much better, but
cdlabel does CDDB lookup as well. I'm hoping to merge the
two and add some features of my own, but who knows if it'll
ever see the light of day. :/
There's also a package called 'cdlabelgen' (current version
is 0.70), which generates inserts specifically for backup
data CDs. Check out http://www.red-bean.com/~bwf/software/cdlabelgen/

In Germany, it's even more complicated; the civil law was largely
based on the _Sachsenspiegel_ ("Saxon Mirror"), a codified law from
~1200 (?). Roman law was merged in with the BGB (Brgerliches
Gesetzbuch, Civil Law Code) around 1890.

Don't think so. The application is supposed to do this and adjust
itself according to what it wants and what's available. You might be
able to use xdpyinfo, but it's really not the thing to do.
I simply made links called 'rasmol8' and 'rasmol24' to a startup
script which ran the corresponding binary, with the default ('rasmol')
being whichever was appropriate for the setup.
FWIW, here's the script...
#!/bin/sh
# provide default file locations (but honor any existing settings)
RASMOLPATH=${RASMOLPATH:-/usr/local/lib/rasmol}
RASMOLPDBPATH=${RASMOLPDBPATH:-/usr/local/lib/pdb}
export RASMOLPATH RASMOLPDBPATH
TITLE='RasMol Commands'
case "$0" in
*rasmol24|*rasmol32) RASMOL=.rasmol24 OPTS="$OPTS -bg NavyBlue";;
*) RASMOL=.rasmol8 ;;
esac
case "$HOSTTYPE" in
iris4d*|sgi*) XTERM=xwsh; TOPT=-name; OPTS="$OPTS -e $RASMOL" ;;
*) XTERM=xterm; TOPT=-title; OPTS="$OPTS -e $RASMOL" ;;
esac
exec $XTERM $TOPT "$TITLE" -geometry 80x20 $OPTS "$@"
====================>8 snip 8<========================================
I had links named '.rasmol8', etc, which pointed to the desired binary
files to allow for selecting different versions, as there are several
floating around with different (mis)features. Ick. Feel free to
adapt it as you like.

Hello,
I've installed Linux on a gig of hard drive space on my second IDE
drive. I am booting from a floppy disk because I normally run win95.
Now, I can't open My Computer or run Explorer because it causes my
system to freeze. I was able to get into Device Manager and I noted that
under the Performance Tab, there is an entry for drive F using MS-DOS
compatibility mode. My partitions for win95 only go so far as D (E is my
CD-ROM). Why is win95 even seeing an F drive, which are strictly Linux
partitions? I think this is what's causing win95 to lock up. Please
help.
P.S.
Running Linux on a P120 Mhz, 32 MB RAM, 1MB video RAM (ArkLogic 200MT),
AmiBios. The second drive is in LBA mode while the first drive is in
Auto Mode (Maxtor 6.8G drive). TIA

The thing you nead is a file kalled ".xsession" in your $HOME directory. (on
an standard installed XFree86 XDM reads this file to start your Xsession.
(use man XDM to find out more ;-) ) this file must be executable (chmod
755). In this file
you write what you want XDM to do in your xsession. In your case you want it
to
execute kde (or is it kdm i don't remember) so your file should look
something like this.
#My very own .xsession
kde
nothing more...
If you dont have an .xsession file than XDM will use the system default
/etc/X11/XSession (on an Debian system). This usualy starts a default
windowmanager.
best of luck

It works with the cdj850, and the hpdj, but it doesn't work
particularly well. Both are fine with b&w, but with color... the cdj850
has difficulty reproducing darker tones... the pictures come out noticably
faded. This is a driver limitation that is noted in the driver docs.
The hpdj prints fine at 300 dpi, but doesn't print anything intelligible
at 600 dpi. Nevertheless, the 880C is capable of 600 dpi, and it looks
like the hpdj driver will work quite well, once it's sorted out exactly
how the printer is interpreting the bitplanes sent to it. I've been in
contact with the author of the hpdj driver, and I'm helping him figure
out how it works... stay tuned.

Subject: LILO on /dev/sda6 (ASUS P2B-DS, 2xSCSI disk)
Hi,
I have a problem with LILO. I want to have it on /dev/sda6 and let it
boot /dev/sda2 (W98) and /dev/sda3 (NT4).
This doesn't work on my system with ASUS P2B-DS and two SCSI disks.
What happens is that when configuread as meant (/dev/sd6 active, LILO on
/dev/sda6), the system won't boot.
When I install LILO on /dev/sda things look better. Linux boots fine.
NT4 however, starts a boot sequence but the gives me the BSOD with some
message that it coudn't find the boot device. Ok, silly NT4.
I think I have RTFM. But I still don't know what's going on. If you
know, by all means, speak your mind!!
Right now I have NT4's boot manager successfully configured to boot the
three OSes but I feel -say- akward with this situation. I include a
summary of my configuration.
Cheers,
