Dear Readers,
Another question about RealAudio. I have now installed RealPlayer G2 on my
Linux Debian 2.1 box. It works fine, video works, except no sound!
Although I managed to get a .rm file to play with sound once. My soundcard
is okay, I can play CD's etc., 'cat file > /dev/audio' produces sound. I
have a soundblaster card SB16. This is the output from /dev/sndstat.

I'm having trouble getting a crontab to start a PPP session at 11:59pm
every night. I've tried ....
59 23 * * * /etc/ppp/ppp-on
... and variations, with no success.
I can't find a clue in the man pages (yes, I RTFM!) and have other
crontabs the do work, so crond is doing its thing.
The rest of the crontab script will reset the local machine time from an
NIST server, then download my email and end the PPP session. I use a
similar script at the office ... the exception being that that Linux
server has a dedicated connection to the web so I never need to
start/stop a PPP session.

You got the %D%M%Y stuff from 'man date', right? Try:
> * 3 * * * cp /home/noosastat.html /home/httpd/html/noosa/`date +%D%M%Y`.html
Stuff in back-quotes is interpreted first. I have not tested the above.

What soundcard (and driver) do you have? /dev/sndstat is only
supported by OSS, not by the additional drivers in the kernel that
have the OSS-API but are not part of it (at least this is valid for
the driver for the Creative Soundblaster 64PCI).

I guess it is quite easy: The package formats of Slackware and RPM are
not compatible. If you try to install a RPM the rpm-program looks up
its own database of what is installed. This database is unknown to
Slackware and therefore it is not up to date.
I would suggest never to mix different distros, not even if they use
the same package format (like RedHead and SuSE). Instead get
tar-archives and install them in /usr/local. That is the place where
to put those things.

Ever tried accessing the drive as root? If not so do it. If you have
access to it then you probably have set the permissons wrong:
/dev/zip should be a symbolic link and have permissions 777. Get the
REAL device that /dev/zip is a link to (ls -l) and change the
permissions of this device. If you set them to 777 everybody should be
able to access the drive.

Subject: 10.2 GB IDE disk partition question
Date: 05 Jun 1999 13:21:55 -0400
Hi, I have a question about my 10.2GB quantum fireball IDE harddisk.
I purchased it recently and wanted to use it soly for Linux. I only
partitioned it into a swap partiton of 100MB and a native Linux partition
for the rest, the following is the partition table:
Disk /dev/hdd: 16 heads, 63 sectors, 19885 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Begin Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdd1 1 1 204 102784+ 82 Linux swap
/dev/hdd2 205 205 19885 9919224 83 Linux native
The space for the Linux partition /dev/hdd2 is around 9.9GB
However, after I used mkfs.ext2 to make the filesystem, looking at the
following df result:
Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on
/dev/hda3 959000 770761 137033 85% /
/dev/hda4 1119837 656152 405826 62% /mnt
/dev/hdb3 2307103 8008 2179813 0% /opt
/dev/hdd2 9559556 2738249 6325346 30% /mnt2
/dev/hda1 1535872 1266496 269376 82% /dosc
/dev/hdb1 2562112 912512 1649600 36% /dosd
/dev/hdd only has ~9.5GB space, and Used (2738249) + Available (6325346)
is even less (~9.0GB), I suppose that is because the filesystem needs some extra
space to store the file headers and other infos etc., but why does the
filesystem only show up for 9.5GB, where did the other 400MB (9.9GB -9.5GB)
go? Is it normal? Thanks in advance.

Indeed. However, I'm trying to find out *which* modules; something for
which there appears no current information about involving a 2.2.x kernel.
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/ESS1868 does *not* mention anything
about it. A paste of the Sound screen is what I'm after.

Yes. However, that file does not deal with the settings required in the
`make menuconfig` kernel settings under Sound. The only documentation I've
seen on the web, which *does* deal with this card and include the Sound
submenu, only covers kernel 2.0.x.

Hi Raymond,
is it an external modem connected to COM1? That port
is supposed to use IRQ 4, not IRQ 3 (which is for COM2=/dev/ttyS1).
You might also try to use setserial like this:
setserial -b /dev/ttyS0 auto_irq skip_test autoconfig session_lockout
To add/drop options, see the man page.
If you have an _internal_ modem configured with jumpers to react
to COM1, IRQ3... again, it is better to use standard COM1-IRQ4,
although this is up to you.
If you experience the error message configuring an internal modem and if
you are sure it is jumper-configured the same way as you tell setserial,
this might mean you've got a winmodem...
Look up http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html
Best,
a.

This is kind of minimalistic approach. I noticed that it is good idea
to plan around 50MB for each "new thing" (java, maple, kernel source, ...).
256MB does not sound good to me.
Regarding / -- the unpredictable beasts are /var and /tmp (and /home...).
This is certainly a good idea to mount other partitions for all three,
not to have nice surprises when someone emails you the latest Xfree86 by
mistake (/var/spool/mail/..) while you are downloading from lynx another
5MB (being stored in /tmp).

Can't help you out there since I use a different sound card. You could try
to make adlib, sb, etc.. If you make modules of them they will not be loaded
when you don't need them. You could also try to figur out what modules it
used when you did a standard installation (/etc/conf.modules)

Melle,
From the "Linux System Administrator's Survival Guide" ... it makes a
difference which way the authentication is run. If the local machine has to
authenticate itself, then the local hostname is the client and the server
hostname is the server field. However, if your machine sends the callenge, the
process (and fields) are reversed. The remote hostname is the client and your
local hostname is the server. The examples in the book are:
#The local machine authenticates itself
# client server string addresses
merlin.tpci.com big_guy.big_net.com "I hate DOS"
#This reverses the process
# client server string addresses
big_guy.big_net.com merlin.tpci.com "I hate DOS"
Hope this helps.

Hi all
im having a problem with the esd daemon. I can send normal .au files to the
/dev/audio device and it plays it. I run the esd daemon, it takes over the
port (i know this because it will no longer accept the .au files). but when
i try to play a sound (by using esdcat for example), it does nothing. it
seems its receiving the data ok, its just not outputting it.
what the hell is going on!?!

Maybe you missed to connect the audio-out on the back of the CDROM to
the audio-in of the soundcard?
Have you tried to listen with headphones connected directly to the
CDROM?
Does the drive's LED light up if you try?

I have RH5.2 and had similar problem with NEC MultiSync 15" 1024x768 res. I
tweaked the X Window by first upgrading to XFree86-3.3.3.1 then copying MS
Windows all font (C:\Windows\Fonts) binaries into /usr/ttfonts, also at
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ttfonts then run 'xfstt --sync' and edited XF86Config
FonthPath entires to this:
# Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated together)
Fontpath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/"
FontPath "tcp/127.0.0.1:7100"
My Netscape Communicator 4.08 fonts now looks like in MS Windows 95 desktop with
better contrast, too. I set variable fonts is Times New Roman (Ttf) and fixed
font as Courier New (Ttf), cannot be scaled. I seldom boot NT at my /dev/hda1
because Linux boots faster than surf the net faster, too. There were times when
Netscape suddenly disappear or minimize in my X Window and so I use WindowMaker
that Netscape not been annoyingly minimize nor disappear...
