Hi,
Is it possible to deliver an X session to a windows box? I'm trying to
set up linux as a server for two different windows (win98) machines
with telnet being the only way to get into the linux box. Now,
console is fine by me, but the guy I'm setting it up for wants,
no..NEEDS...a gui interface. Is there any way this can be
achieved, given the setup. I hope this isn't too vague (assume
all the X11 resources are set up in a standard, working format
using slak3.5, and that xhost is happy).

Thanks for any advice/pointers towards FAQs/URLs.

Hi there!

I'm looking for good webcam server-software
and hardware for Linux (SuSE 5.*/6.*).

keywords:
- stable software
- serverpush/clientpull/streaming/stills
(and upload of pictures through ftp to provider)
- availability (hard & software)
- parallel interface
- free (GNU,almost free) software
- cheap but good color camera
- compatability browsers & platforms (clients)
- easy to use/install

I want to use it for dialup connections, Intranet
and for livecontent on webpages.

Any suggestions?

Thx

I tried ufs , perhaps I got the case wrong. I'll try it again.

I am running Red Hat 5.0 (kernel 2.0.31) but I'm planning
update my kernel as soon as I figure out how to do that.

The first thing you should check is whether the audio-devices
(/dev/audio and /dev/dsp) have read- and write-permissions set for
you. If they are not, NO programm that does not have root-permissions
can do anything with the audio devices. As audio players want to put
the sound somewhere (OK, they want to put it to your sound-card) they
must have write-permissions to the drives and to record audio you need
read-permission. You might need read-permission as well to obtain
status-information from the card.

The other option would be to make all programms that access the
sound-card suid-root. For x11amp it has the further advantage that
this programm will run with real-time priority resulting in a smoother
playback. But of course making programs suid-root is always a security
hole, especially if you are not absolutely sure that
1. the program is secure
2. every user who can access the program is really trustworthy.

Therefor I would recommend making the audio-devices available to all
or to some special group and place all users that you want to allow
using sound in that group (the last only makes sens if your computer
REALLY has multiple users not just root (you) and your working login
(again you)).

> I can play audio cd with xplaycd without any problem.

I don't know the program xplaycd but I assume that it is a normal
cd-player. In that case it does NOT access sound-devices; it rather
accesses the cd-device and tells it to play the cd. In most computers
(especially those that had a cd-rom and a soundcard in them when
bought) there exists a HW-link from the audio-out of the cd-rom to the
cd-in of the sound-card. The sound-card automatically mixes the signal
of the cd with the other sound it creates (which might be none of
course in your case).

I hope I could help.

No; log in as your real username, and then become
root by using "su -".

It's for your own protection.

Just arrange your DNS like this:-

$ORIGIN foo.com
www IN A 199.1.1.1 ; first machine
www IN A 199.1.1.2 ; second machine

The addresses will be served to callers in a round-robin fashion.
That is, a random client will be given one of these two addresses when
they ask for "www.foo.com".

Which is the best way to offer connectivity to mobile users with
Windows on laptops? Dial-up plus HTTP? Samba? They need access to
data, the ability to submit files, plus run some fairly undemanding
apps (the sort that could easily be implemented with either
client-side Java/Javascript or some CGI on the server).

Mine has always done that too. It seems that the input and output gain on the
card get set to maximum when it's initialized. If you have a mixer program that
lets you adjust the gain settings, turn them down. You don't need them set that
high. If, on the other hand, your card doesn't have adjustable gain, I don't
know what to tell you. (Other than, if you hear noises that vary with what
you're doing on your computer, disable your microphone input when you're not
using a microphone.)

Right, well after no reply I sorta figured that out but how does the
user (who now has the ability to start PPP) actually start the PPP
connection through X11? You see before I was going into the network
control panel and activating it from there. Do I need to do it from the
shell?

BTW: I used "chmod u+s /usr/sbin/pppd" if that was correct.

Please someone, answer this time.

It sounds like a DNS thing. Try adding an entry for your Win95 box into your

It's not a waste of time. As a sysadmin, the trouble to su to root

tty1-tty8 are your virtual consoles. This asumes that anyone who is

If you must login as root, occasionally this is true I suggest

Subject: NCR53C8XX problem with kernel 2.2.3 setup
Date: Fri, 19 Mar 1999 18:13:19 GMT

Hi folks,

I'm setting up a Compaq Proliant 5000 with RedHat 5.2. I've compiled 2.2.3
(for the SMP support; it's a 4 cpu machine) but I am now having problems with
the NCR 53C825 on-board SCSI controller.

The controller works fine under the RedHat 2.0.36-0.7 generic kernel.

Here's what I've tried:

1) compile the NCR53C8XX driver into the kernel. On reboot, the NCR driver
never starts at all, and I get a kernel panic (unable to mount root, etc).

2) compile the NCR53C8XX driver as a module, use mkinitrd to create an
initrd.img file, make the initrd entry in lilo.conf. On reboot, the driver
starts but gives ncr53c8xx.o: init_module: Device or resource busy; kernel
panic, etc.

One oddity that I can think of: I have to do "lilo -l" to use linear mode
because of how the disk was set up, apparently.

If I can get this box set up then we'll be using Linux for our Intranet,
database server, reporting server, mail, you name it.

Any suggestions would be *greatly* appreciated!

Linux emulator doesn't exist. If your Linux machine is connected to
the internet (all the time or just most). Then you can run those
programs remotely. X programs need a xserver to be run on NT.
