Hi !
I recently decided to run Linux on my Sun Ultra 5... First I thought that

I tried to recompile the kernel (2.2.15) but all the way I get the following

Yes, before you install a NIS server, you should configure it.

I bought a new CDROM drive and I could read the before mentioned discs
with Windows, but Linux did still hang. The weird thing is that if I
boot my Linux box with the boot CD (I use SUSE 6.3)and start the
installed Linux I get no problems, but if a boot directly with the HD I
can not mount ANY CDs and Linux hangs
Does anybody know what's happening ?? Does Linux store some information
about the instaled drives and it did no get updated ??
Thank you

This is completely Linux-unrelated. Please use a group dealing
with Usenet newsreaders for such questions. news.newusers.questions

Mega_FAQ. Enlarge the window with the newsgroup names, then you'll see
small checkboxes behind the names showing up. The default size of the
Netscape window is just too small for noticing them. Check those groups
you want to be persisting.

On the machine recieving the call you need to edit the inittab thus:
mo:23:/usr/sbin/mgetty -s 38400 modem
or very similar. modem can be replaced with ttySx dep. on which serial
line you are
using, if you haven't got a symbolic link to /dev/modem. You can also
replace 38400
with 57600, 115200, etc. The handshake during the call decides the
speed, you are just
setting an upper limit.
To connect to this machine use cu or minicom, or whatever, from your
Linux box.
Matt.

Anything that works, is "good", but that's an interesting twist on things
there. I did the upgrade to the Helix stuff, also, without encountering that.
Here is the imlib stuff that upgraded.
rpm -q imlib
imlib-1.9.8-0_helix_1
I took the path of upgrading Gnome, followed by E.
Interesting, huh? I run 2 entirely seperate hard drives as masters, here. One
drive, I used the auto upgrade offered on the gnome site, where a line is
pasted into lynx to start the process. The other drive, I opted to do by
downloading the pieces, hoping I might learn something that way. In both
cases, I wound up with the helix imlibs and E started without issues. This
might be worth pursuing until we understand it, perhaps.

Subject: Problems creating initial ramdisk
Date: Fri, 19 May 2000 06:40:56 -0500
Hello all,
I am trying to create a firewall system which will run entirely from a
ramdisk. My plans are to create a small DOS partition, install
syslinux, and start the ramdisk from an image file on the
DOS partition. I've been successful before in creating a functioning
initrd but can't remember what I did differently.
I need more than the 4MB maximum ramdisk size, so I have patched rd.c on
the kernel I plan to use on the firewall (kernel 2.2.14). I changed the
value to 16 MB, which should be plenty of space (I'm using busybox).
I am creating the image file with:
dd if=/dev/zero of=firewall.img bs=1k count=16384
When I format the ramdisk image file with a block size of 4K (mke2fs -b
4096), ext2fs complains:
Ext2-fs: Magic mismatch, very weird!
If I format the image using 1K blocks (mke2fs -b 1024), I get:
ll_rw_blk: only 4096 char-blocks implemented (1024)
I have also tried to use a minix fs on the beast, and I get the same
results. What's going on?

There are a number of small linux (floppy linux) available on the
net configured for various uses (internet access, rescue disks, etc.).
Download and set up one of these (via another computer or Win98 on the
one you have). This should let you install a small linux system in RAM
that will give you access to the tools you need to find your boot
sectors and run LILO again. Tomsrootboot (or something like that) is
one of the floppy distros configured as a rescue disk. Mulinux installs
completely in RAM, but its designed more as a net accessor (but still
has some basic utilities, including a floppy to give X and a floppy to
give GCC).
