Excuse me, but could you get a clue please.
This is a text newsgroup for Linux, not some windows binary drop off point.
This is the second binary I've seen here in as many days.
Sod off until you learn how to post properly!

Fair enough.. Any software for OS2 or BeOS handle MPEG-1-ification
of video sampled using a BT848 video-based digitizer board? I'm looking
to transfer MST3k episodes from VHS to VideoCD/MPEG and I'd hate to use
NT but I _do_ have this copy of Adobe Premiere... Heck, it might possibly
be a time for BeOS, if the rest of my bits check out on the hardware
compatibility list..
(Or Linux for that matter? ;)

Hmm, can you temporarily swap the CD-ROM drive to the 386?
(Requires 2-connector IDE cable--one for hard drive, one for CD-ROM.
With a sufficiently long cable, you might even be able to leave
the CD-ROM drive in its original machine. (I do that for the floppy
drive between my 386 and 286.))
Presumably when you say "Linux 6", you're actually referring
to Red Hat Linux 6.0. Redhat's basically geared for people who
are into buying new things, so they tend to have CD-ROMs and newer
PCs; Red Hat is all the rage, you know.. On the other hand,
distributions like, say, Slackware are broken down into "sets".
The base set might be 14 floppies, the compiler set might be 10
floppies (arbitrary numbers), and so on. For a floppy install
(which can be somewhat fulfilling in the same sense as running
a marathon (I would guess--I never ran one)), a Slack-esque
"distro" is the way to go, y'o.

Subject: what is 'daemon' statement?
Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1999 06:26:13 GMT
Most of the shell scripts that start server processes during bootup,
found in /etc/rc.d/init.d, follow the pattern below (using
/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd as example):
#see how we were called
case "$1" in
start)
echo -n "Starting httpd: "
daemon httpd
etc.
;;
stop)
echo -n "Shutting down http: "
etc.
The things that gets 'daemon'd' look by name to correspond with binary
executables in one of the bin/sbin directories somewhere.
What's this 'daemon' statement in shell scripting or where is it
documented?

Install the LILO boot sector on a floppy, having it use the hard disk's
root (and other) partition and using the kernel on the hard disk. It
boots quite fast and will work fine until you DO THE RIGHT THING (TM)
and back up your data. THEN mess around with your boot records, etc,
which is always risky, even when you expect it to work correctly.
I don't remember having done exactly what you propose, but I'm quite
familiar with LILO and it should work fine as long as hda3 is a primary
partition as it seems to be. I'd probably do the M$DOS fdisk/mbr thing
instead of uninstalling the LILO MBR though; I prefer to make partitions
and boot records with the brand of software that is going to use them.
It shouldn't matter though, as lilo will just put back the old MBR
(you hope).

I have a big problem. I have RedHat installed on my system, with kernel
2,2,15, and (unfortunately) with S3 Trio 64V+, which is working
correctly!
Now I decided to try to recompile the kernel, and I have started the
'make xconfig', after which the kernel setup menu appeared. Now my
problem is that when I want to set up the Video card, S3 is GREYED!! I
cannot choose the card I have on my system. It is probably some
dependency problem!? I have tried several combinations but it didn't
work!!
Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

I read somewhere in a book about Unix in general (not Linux
specifically) that a kernel PANIC message usually means
hardware failure. I don't recall where I read this, and
I certainly can't be sure that's your problem, but you
might want to consider it a possibility.

2.3.7, you mean. The 2.2.xx-series has never gotten the VFS makeover
breaking all filesystems.
It's probably just stale modules from a previous compilation.

Subject: Infrequently connected to Internet
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Sean McAfee)
Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1999 06:45:01 GMT
My Linux machine at home is only infrequently connected to the Internet,
and when it is I'm assigned a dynamic IP address via PPP. When I
originally installed my distibution (Slackware), it asked me for a host
name, so I arbitrarily gave it the name "lion-o".
I haven't had any big problems with this arrangement so far, since I always
only initiate IP connections, and never accept them (knowingly, anyway) from
the outside. However, I've recently been attempting to compile MICO (a free
CORBA ORB), and as part of the compilation process it calls gethostbyname()
with my faux hostname "lion-o". The system call fails, of course, bringing
compilation to a screeching halt.
What's the best long-term solution to this situation? I remember something
from the Slackware installation about a loopback interface; I didn't select
it, but could it be what I need now? Do I ultimately need a configuration
that will make gethostbyname("lion-o") return a struct hostent containing
127.0.0.1? (I'm really grasping at straws here, obviously.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

** Windows 98 still recognize the LINUX partition and attempts to use it...
**
Hello... even though I have received quite a few advices - it seems that in
my situation none of them seem to work... Well, the problem goes as
follows. I have two hard-drives, one [about 13 GB in size is the original
hardrive, provided
with the DELL Mathine; Windows 98 reside on that]; the other hardrive -
MAXTOR 8.2 GB, Model # 90845D4 is an empty hardrive; now - exclusively
dedicated to LINUX. I am trying to use both operatin system simultaneously,
installing LINUX on the MAXTOR hardrive.
Using fdisk in LINUX I reformated this hard-drive and elminated all
partitions from it. Then - checked the system through Windows - and to my
pleasure found that Windows would not see any of the MAXTOR hardrive.
Returning to the Red-Hat 6.2 setup, I would set up LINUX fully using up the
space on the aforementioned MAXTOR hardrive. After the setup, LINUX fdisk
[details provided below] would recognize the MAXTOR 8.2 GB hardrive as LINUX
native. Nevertheless, once back in Windows - Windows 98 would recognize and
provide part [5.2 GB] of the LINUX dedicated hardrive for usage in
Windows... [this time - no scanning or reformatting requested...].
Below: I have provided the fdisk "pictures" shown by both OS's... I would
greatly appreciate any help in solving this "mystery"... i.e. - HOW to make
Windows 98 forget about the other hardrive???
Thanks,
Kristaps Licis
fdisk printouts follow:
The original DELL provided hardrive is partitioned into three partitions
that show given Linux fdsisk -l command as:
Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 1662 cylinders
Device Boot Start End Blocks ID
System
/dev/hda1 * 1 770 6184993+ c
Win95 FAT32 (LBA)
/dev/hda2 771 1412 5156865 c
Wind95 FAT32 (LBA)
/dev/hda3 1413 1662 5156865 c
Wind95 FAT32 (LBA)
The current LINUX partitions of the MAXTOR hardrive show up as:
Disk /dev/hdb: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 1027 cylinders
Device Boot Start End Blocks ID
System
/dev/hdb1 1 4 32098+ 83
Linux
/dev/hdb2 5 1027 8217247+ 5
Extended
/dev/hdb3 5 21 136521 82
Linux swap
/dev/hdb4 22 1027 8080663 83
Linux
Consequently, all of the MAXTOR Drive is used up by Linux, or one might
assume - Windows should not be able to see this space... Nonetheless,
windows fdisk shows the following "scene":
