The only thing I've ever seen lock up Linux this bad is a hardware problem
(ie a dead cpu fan etc).

<Ctrl><Alt><Del> shouldn't do anything in X. <Ctrl><Alt><Backspace> should
kill X however.

Just to gather some data, try hitting <CapsLock> or <NumLock> and see if the
LEDs on your keyboard respond, if not then chances are very good that you
have a hardware problem. If you are on the net when this happens maybe you
could go to a friend's house or maybe a Net Cafe and try to telnet in from
there? Alternativly you could set up your machine to answer the phone and
then dial in from somewhere else.
The bottom line is that while Netscape is not as stable is it should be, it
should NEVER lock up Linux and I've never seen it even take out X. If it
does then there is something VERY wrong.

There a number of calls in the text file this crontab comes from (I only sent
you part of it), and I mistakenly forgot to remove the # signs in the sample I
sent you. This is the applicable portion of the crontab as it *actually is* ...
# crontab to set up PPP connection, get time/date
# use /bin/sh to run commands, no matter what /etc/passwd says
SHELL=/bin/sh
# Make PPP connection using ppp-on shell script
# MAILTO=""
5 0 * * * /etc/ppp/ppp-on
6 0 * * * /usr/bin/rdate -s -p 132.163.135.130
7 0 * * * /etc/ppp/ppp-off
... and does not work. If the PPP session is already up, the call to rdate works
fine.

You need a lot more than the kernel to upgrade completely to
RH6.0. It's best to get a CD from CheapBytes and upgrade
from CD.

Are the files in /usr/man/man? being truncated?
Try going into /var/catman/* and deleting any old *.gz's
that your find. Then try man again. Maybe your man
formatting engine is in trouble.
Just a thought...

Really? I've had Netscape lock up at times but all I have to do is switch
to an xterm and do a "killall netscape" or maybe "killall -9 netscape" if
it's really bad.

I suspect there is a problem with the drive/adapter and or driver
combination. I have a 4416S running on a Symbios 53c875 without
any problems. If this happens with Linux only and other OSs run fine
then you should try to contact those people maintaining the
Adaptec driver.

Funny..I've had a completely opposite experience. 4.07 crashed on me
only 3 times in 4 months, whereas 4.6 crashed 3 times in the first 10
minutes, then I deleted it and went back to 4.07.

Subject: How do I modify groups for menus in AnotherLevel(fvwm95)?
Date: Sun, 06 Jun 1999 21:08:28 GMT
Folks:
I have recently installed RedHad v5.2 on a machine, and have
been trying to figure out how to modify the menu structure in X
Windows.
To the best of my understanding, all the available window
managers included in RH5.2 share some common configuration files for
the menu structure.
I have figured out this much:
1. To add or delete a program to an EXISTING group, simply create or
delete a file in the /etc/X11/wmconfig directory, and make it look
similar to the other files in the wmconfig directory.
2. To modify the very top level of the menu, I have dicovered that
one needs to edit /etc/X11/AnotherLevel/fvwm2rc.menus.m4.
My question is this:
In some documentation, I have seen that to place the files in
the groups that you want. there is a line in there to specify the
group, i.e. (this example taken from RedHat's site)
xwp name "Word Perfect 7.0"
xwp description "Corel Word Perfect"
xwp group WordProcessors
xwp exec "/opt/wp70/wpbin/xwp &"
but my problem is (using the example abobe), if there is not a group
call WordProcessors, the menu entry gets "promoted" to the top level
(this is when I run wmconfig, the program).
QUESTION:
How do I add or delete groups in AnotherLevel? Is there a decent
place to read documentation? I have read in quite a few places, some
telling me to modify my .xinitrc. I don't even have a .xinitrc!
I am considering going to KDE window manager, as I have read that it
is a little more friendly to modifying the menus.
Thanks in advance for your help,

Subject: Linux (RH 6.0) & Seti error ?
Date: Sun, 06 Jun 1999 19:56:03 GMT
Hello,
I have setiathome running on a new server install I completed Friday
night (runs great). After getting past adding ./ to my command to start
setiathome (./setiathome from /usr/share/seti) I noticed an odd message
when the work unit was complete. The ppp0 interface was not up or
connected so the display reported that it would try "...connecting in an
hour". I started my ppp0 connection ala usernet, closed the xterm
setiathome was using, opened another xterm and ran ./setiathome -email.
The connect to server message appeared (contacted the server) and the
next message appeared (that I'm curious about):
found data file: no found result header file: no
receiving... <appeared like normal from here>
Can anyone assist in diagnosing what looks to a new Linux/Unix user like
me to be an error ? Of course if my seti stats rise another work unit
then I know it's not an error.
TIA,
david

Isn't that Caldera's angle: to provide an enterprise-ready Linux, with all
the "geeky" (read: scary for managers) stuff safely tucked away?
If there are people who like that stuff, kudos to them.

I do a make mrproper everytime before I recompile a new kernel.
something about cleaning up older dependancies. and it works for me.
I have compiled every version of the 2.2.X kernels (running 2.2.9
right now), and i never had a problem. one other thing to consider is
that the 2.2.X kernels are pretty big so its advised to make bzImage
instead of make zImage (in your case its make bzlilo instead of make
zlilo). I use this faq extensively whenever compiling a kernel

may I (who happily uses a somewhat modified RH4 system) ask why you want
to upgrade? Unless there is a specific reason (don't really see what that
could be) I would get used to linux for a while, learn things such as how
to find and execute executables, and leave the obsession with the latest
upgrades to others.

Perhaps, but this happened to me once... Netscape froze when
my girlfriend went to http://www.beaniesdownunder.com/. It started by
acting weird: the mouse buttons wouldn't do what they were supposed to.
After maybe 30 seconds, it froze out all mouse clicks and eventually
froze out the keyboard. I could still move the pointer on the screen with
the mouse, but none of the buttons would work. <CapsLock> and <NumLock>
didn't change the LEDs on the keyboard.
I've never had any serious problems with my hardware (specs below)
before or after this incident.

In my case, it didn't lock up Linux, but it sure did a number
on X. My specs:
XFree86 3.3.3.1
STB Velocity 4400 (OEM -- Riva TNT chipset)
stock RedHat 5.2 kernel (2.0.36)
GNOME (core: 1.0.4-13rh, libs: 1.0.8-2rh)
Enlightenment 0.15.5-25
My guess was that it was a problem with Java (since that page
uses Java buttons) and E/GNOME... My X server has been pretty solid (one
other crash in about six months of usage -- again caused by Netscape).
