Install xfsft or xfstt. There are rpms available for both.
Read the documentation carefully. If you install xfsft, also read
documentation for xfs.

Subject: mp3 problems, compilation woes and ICQ recommendations
Date: Sat, 20 Mar 1999 15:30:12 +0300
I'm trying to get an mp3 player working on my RedHat 5.1 system, with
KDE 1.1.
First I've tried FreeAmp 1.2.0 but could not get any output from it. My
plugins are in the right location, I can play sound and listen to CDs
fine, but no mp3 output.
I've decided to try kmp3. No sound either. The faq tells me to download
the mpg123 and make it. When i try to make it, I get a lot of messages
telling me that make can't find the standard library files, i.e.
stdlib.h, string.h, etc. I think this indicates an even bigger problem.
Any and all help, both on how to fix make and on how to play mp3 files,
either with these two players or with some other player will be greatly
appreciated.
One more thing: I'm trying to find and install a decent (doesn't have to
be graphical) icq client. Any recommendations?
These (mp3 and icq) are the only two reasons I still occasionally work
with windoze... Please help me break free :)

That's not entirely true. You can still automatically switch off the
power after shutdown on an ATX/SMP machine under Linux 2.2.X. This is
what you have to do:
1) Enable "Advanced Power Management BIOS support" and
"Power off on shutdown" in your kernel configuration.
2) Add "apm=smp-power-off" to your kernel command line (e.g. in
/etc/lilo.conf). This only enables the APM power-off feature. All
other APM functions are still automatically disabled on an SMP box.
3) Make sure that "halt -p" or "poweroff" is run at the end of your
shutdown script. There are still a lot of distributions out there which
only run "halt". This worked with 2.0.X kernels, but 2.2.3 insists on
"halt -p".
Cheers,
Mike

The latest version at the time of writing this is 2.2.3, and can be
found at ftp.kernel.org (use your local mirror)
You'll probably find that upgrading to a 2.2.x kernel will give you a
fair speed boost, but it's not a simple job. Read the kernel HOWTO, but
be aware that you may have to install updated versions of a few packages
(modtools etc)
Good luck

Like the other posters have responded, you -could- go to ftp.kernel.org,
and find yourself the newest, latest kernel. Since a) you're using Red
Hat, and b) you're a fairly new user (I'm guessing - no disrespect), I
have NO IDEA why they are suggesting anything other than finding a more
recent kernel RPM. Suggesting that you get a tar.gz and compile it
yourself, given the fact that you can only guess what options RH has
chosen for the kernel, is asking for trouble.
at www.redhat.com, at their "support" pages, you'll find links to the
errata for RH 5.1. On this page, they have provided a number of kernel
upgrades to the stock 2.0.34 provided with RH5.1. I believe they're now
at 2.0.36.
You could also find an RPM for the 2.2.* series of kernels, but you'll
have to update and hack a number of other things. You can get an RPM
for 2.2.2, I believe, by FTP at either contrib.redhat.com or
rawhide.redhat.com. There are documents floating around to describe how
to do this safely and successfully for a Red Hat system. (Sorry, I
don't know where.)

cd to (for example) /opt/wp8/wpbin and enter "./xwp &". You can also
create a short shell script to start WP without the hassle, something
like
#!bin/sh
#starts wp8
/opt/wp8/wpbin/xwp &
and call it "wp" or whatever.
Make the script executable with
chmod +x wp
Put it someplace like /bin/ so that you can run it from anyplace.

How does that explain Red Hat's continued contributions to open source

I did this, here's what I did: I don't know if you have linuxconf installed
on your system, but if you do, it should be easy. Go into file systems,
select the root partition, and one of the options is to mount it read-only.
You can also do the same by editing etc/fstab and specifying ro instead of
the default. Check out the file, the syntax is pretty easy.
I'm open to corrections/flames, tho -

The best freeware IDE is, of course, Emacs. :-)
There are some people who disagree - it's probably best to try the
various IDEs and see if you are one of them. RHIDE can be found on
its homepage http://www.tu-chemnitz.de/~sho/rho/rhide.html or on
metalab. There may be RPMs floating around somewhere.
Last time I checked, there was stub support in Allegro for Linux using
SVGAlib but nothing useable. Freshmeat reveals an X version at
http://www.canvaslink.com/allegro/xwinallegro/index.html , but I've no
idea what it's like.

Just boot from an old Windows bootdisk (which has your cd drivers on it)
and run fdisk to remove all partitions. Create one new partition using 100%
of availible space. Reboot and install from the CD (or disks, if that is
what you have). At least, that's what I did last time I had to get rid of
Linux.

The latest kernel sources can be found at
www.kernel.org
and it's mirrors. Be aware that when upgrading kernel series 2.0.xx to
2.2.xx, many of the compiler/tools/libraries will have to be upgraded as
well
check www.linuxhq.com for upgrade instructions.

You can change .xpm's wherever you like. I don't know which
wm you're using, but fvwm2 will have an rc file either in
your home directory (.fvwm2rc) or located elsewhere as
system.fvwm2rc. If you open this file you can identify and
change the appearance of things to your heart's delight.
fvwm95 is the same way, just replace the "2" with "95".
Don't know anything about the bloated window managers that
a lot of people seem to prefer these days...

The technical contact can be anyone you want. He doesn't really have to do
anything anyway (I'm the technical contact for my domain, I've never had to
do anything)

This depends on what kind of IP you have, static or dynamic. AFAIK it's not
possible to have a domain with a dynamic IP, as your address changes every
time you log on. There are some places (like www.dynip.com) that can
provide you with a subdomain on a dynamic IP, but that costs money, plus
you have to run a special client software, and I don't know if that
software is availible for Linux
If you have a static IP (dedicated connection/some cable modem accounts),
you can setup your box to be a DNS and to run a web server. Unfortunately,
you need two DNS's, one primary and one backup. I don't know if there are
any free DNS servers out there, my hosting provider takes care of that.
Otherwise, maybe you could get a friend to run a DNS if they have a static
IP as well.
I hope that helps,
/Karl
