The method for "shimming" in depends on the distro you are using. With
RedHat, the best bet is:
Lilo: linux init=/bin/sh
[bootup messages]
$ mount -n -o remount,rw /
$ passwd root
New UNIX password:
Type in new password again:
$ mount -n -o remount,ro /
$ sync
$ sleep 30
$ sync
Then reboot the system, making sure not to forget the root passowrd this
time.

My understanding is that TWAIN is a driver-application interface, not
a hardware-driver interface. You need detailed hardware specs for the
scanner. Good luck finding any.
Umax sells a cheap SCSI scanner, though they will not support you in
any way manner or form. Just mentioning Linux trashes any hope of

Including the spammers. My problem with that approach is that it
would do nothing to stop spam, and yet -still- be a (minor) irritation
to people trying to do e-mail replies.
> But just addiing this to a mailing list would not work.
I think the point of the thread was that 'nospam' is simple for a
computer to remove and tedious for a human. I may disagree with the
argument that there are no benefits to munging addresses, but that's
just me...
> It should then be illegal to remove the nospam prefix for purposes

a) That would involve getting the government in on this, which, given
their general lack of morals, I would rather not do.
b) I'd rather not receive any spam-mail at all than spend all my time
reporting spammers to the cops.
Is there a real solution? Naturally, I can't say for sure. However,
if it -does- become illegal to send spam-mail, people with enough time
on their hands to do so could set up special e-mail accounts designed
specifically to catch people doing so (perhaps by forwarding all
incoming mail to the FCC), and post to usenet with them.
OTOH, I don't pretend to know very much about politics, either in real
life or on the net. I just live with whatever happens, I guess, and
defend myself in the meantime.

All version of M$-DOS went for around $39 (which was "state of the
art" at that time). Heck, even WinNT 3.50 only cost $45. So why
does Win95/Win98 (which are still based on the old DOS code base,
and thus only upgrades of the original DOS) cost 2 to 3 times as much
as DOS did?

Actually i am not sure about the size number, but anyway here is the whole
problem. I just got a 13 gig drive and partitioned it into 4 partitions 1st
was fat, 2nd was ntfs (am using win NT 4.0), 3rd was linux swap, 4th was
linux native. I installed everything haivng a few problems along the way
(like formating size or something to that effect) but everything installed
but when i tried to install linux it warned me that lilo might not like the
fact that something about the fact taht my sector <i think that was it> size
was larger than 1024. well sure enough lilo didn't seem to like it, but i am
able to boot from a lilo boot disk but not from the hard drive... any ideas?

Well, the Germans succeeded much too much with regard to genocide as
well. A lot of Jewish life in German has ceased to be. Many of those
that have survived are now living in the reservation Israel,
conveniently located away in Asia.
At least the Germans have acknowledged their guilt, paid reparations
and try to have good relations with current Israel, as well as to
support Jewish culture and congregations where they indeed want to
return and develop again in Germany. It is very little in comparison
to what has happened, but at least it is a matter in public
conscience.
Extreme nationalist parties in Germany get election results of about
2-4%. Contrast this with France with has a current ratio of Front
Nationale of about 30% (if I remember correctly).
Considering the general enthusiasm for nationalism all over Europe at
the beginning of the century, it looks somewhat like "lesson
learned". Somewhat. Immigration is still good for cheap propaganda
even among the right-leaning non-extremist parties.

suid root doesn't work on shell scripts, because of the security
implications. Write a small C program to issue the commands via system()
calls, and set the uid on that, by issuing:
chmod u+x dialupscript

I'm still a newbie with Linux. But after my time with Windows, I have
to say that my new philosophy is, "if it works, don't mess with it."
The only reason to upgrade is to fix a bug or to get a new feature.
If everything you need works, there is no point in changing things
just for the sake of change.
Having said that, I plan to upgrade when the 2.2 kernel is stable.
There are some new features I want such as video for linux.

Amazing. Two responses to your question, both wrong.
The key here is that you're using RH 5.0, which contains the 2.0.32
kernel, which does not support FAT32. You'll have to update to at least
2.0.33 (or 34?) to get FAT32 support.
There might be a packaged kernel upgrade at RedHat's errata site. Once
you -do- have a more recent kernel, you mount it using the "vfat" mount
type option. You can either mount it like this:
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/whereever
or add this line to your /etc/fstab:
/dev/hda1 /mnt/whereever vfat defaults,noexec, 0 0

Change the file boot.ini to point to the new place of the partition.
It is a hidden file and a text file. You should be able to edit this
file from Linux. If not boot from a dos diskette and use attrib to
change the attribute and edit it.
Partition magic seems to have the partition numbering backward to
what NT or Linux see them. I would assume that this is your only
problem.

Not that I know of. They do have quite a few mailing lists for their
various products - for Applix at least the mailing list is the primary
support forum. Take a look at their web site for the exact details.
