I'm using RH 5.1, but you might want to try Xconfigure or XF86Setup
(seems to have more options) if they're on your system.

Subject: knews: How to stop downloading all groups every time?
Date: Sun, 21 Mar 1999 03:20:21 GMT

I just installed the knews newsreader on my Debian (slink) system.

When starting knews this message appears on the terminal window from which it
is launched:
knews: Couldn't determine domain name. Posting will not be possible.

Once knews is up and running, it displays
Connected to server; reading active file...

and takes about 3 minutes to pick up all newsgroups from the server.

Next time I go into knews, the groups get down loaded again. Why are they not
being saved?

Finaly what does the message about not finding domain name mean? Clearly the
news server is found, since it keeps downloading all the group names, and I
can ping it of course also.

Please tell me what I am missing? Thanks in Advance for any suggestions, |\|.

Date: Sun, 21 Mar 1999 03:23:55 GMT

Funny thing the other day. I have to admit this was the first time I
consciously went through all the command-line steps to format a Linux
partition, so maybe this is expected behavior; it just seems a little odd to
me . . .

After creating a 2GB linux primary partition /dev/hda4 (the two others are
DOS/FAT, one is OS/2 boot sector, on first 2GB of 4GB IDE drive) with fdisk I
could not get mke2fs to format the thing until a reboot. (My Linux resides on
hdc, booted via OS/2 boot manager on hda.)

Am I missing something here, or is this just some fluke occurrence?

Of course, it may still not make you any wiser.. it's pretty

I find it helpful to be able to see if anything is passing through the modem,
but with an internal device, the only way would be via some kind of software
monitoring program. Does something like this exist for X that would show at
least receive and transmit acitvity on some kind of virtual lights?

I think 2 and 3 are related here. The problem seems to be that the
kernel you have installed does not include support for msdos/windows
filesystems. This is usually compiled in to the kernel (or as a module)
when you create your new kernel.

As for how to fix it? Well you could compile a new kernel from source.
Or maybe there is another version of the kernel with support available.
I have 0 experience of RPM kernels so i won't comment.

I've decided that I'm going to install a Linux system from scratch for
the learning experience of it. I've made a boot/root disk set to
get the system running with, but I'm having trouble with programs like
ftp and telnet, which I need in order to download software.

When I try to run ftp from this rootdisk, I get a message saying
"ftp: ftp/tcp: unknown protocol". When I try to run ping, I get
"ping: unknown protocol icmp".

I have an /etc/protocols file that lists tcp, udp, and icmp, among
other things. (I just copied the one from my Debian installation.)
Do I need to do something to make the system read the file? Or am I
still missing something?

Please send any replies to my email <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. I
unfortunately don't get to check usenet as often as I'd like.

I think as a slackware user, I would say netscape is the only program that
might need extra checking. But I know for example that software like
wordperfect or mysql need a special license for that.

Here's a hardware solution. Since the off and reset buttons are
mechanical, open up the case and disconnect them. These machine
should be running all the time, so turing them off shouldn't be a
problem. If the terminal locks up you should be able to login
remotely to reboot. If you actually need to turn off the machine,
perhaps your motherboard as APM stuff to turn off the power on a
halt. If all else fails pull the plug.

Almost forgot, in your /etc/inittab disable the CTRL-ALT-DEL reboot.
Amd maybe dust for finger prints.

Better yet, if you can afford the down time, simply
remove that machine for a day or two, and tell
user X that it's in for repairs. That will force
him/her to use a different machine, and you can
see what happens.

If you can't afford the down time on the machine
in question at all, remove it and set it up in
a locked room where X can't get to. Disallow
incoming telnet/rlogin sessions, so that your
grumpy user can't wreak havoc remotely.

It may be possible to track X's processes using
a crontab entry that greps ps for this particular
user; maybe something like 'ps u |grep X'? Have
the output sent to an account on another machine.
(There may be more efficient ways of getting
this info.)

Good luck....

Subject: dwww still does not handle #place_on_page html tags
Date: Sun, 21 Mar 1999 03:26:31 GMT

I am not sure if this is even a bug. Could not find reference in bug reports,
so maybe my setup of dwww (version 1.4.3.4-0.2 just upgrade with debian 2.1 --
"slink") is not configured correctly, but the following annoyance has been
with me ever since I first started using dwww many months ago:

Reference tags in html docs of the form

<A HREF="#somewhere">somewhere_on_a_page</A>

throw you out to the directory containing the html document. As the following
conversion created by dww illustrates, the reason seems to be a badly formed
URL, since the actual name of the file is missing:
________________________________________________________________

If original file /usr/doc/lynx/lynx_help>Lynx_users_guide.html contains:

<li><A HREF="#Help"></A>
________________________________________________________________

then dwww creates:

<A HREF=
"http://home/cgi-bin/dwww?type=file&location=/usr/doc/lynx/lynx_help/#Help"></A>

Since #Help is not a file in the directory, but rather a tag in
Lynx_users_guide.html, a browser like lynx throws you into the directory
instead containing the html document.

This is quite annoying, as you don't know until you follow links what's going
to happen, and if you are thrown out of the file, it is hard to reorient
yourself. I realize dwww is a workin-progress and that whatever generates the
cgi script may have a hard time figuring out the file name, but fixing this
problem sure would make this otherwise great tool (dwww) so much more useful.

Thanks for whatever suggestion you might have.
